Der fünfte Band führt die Frage der Möglichkeit eines Systems der Philosophie nach Kant mit Blick auf die Debattenlagen im zweiten Jahrzehnt des 19. Jahrhunderts weiter. Der 1811/12 zwischen Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi und Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling ausgetragene Theismusstreit gehört neben dem Pantheismusstreit zwischen Jacobi und Moses Mendelssohn sowie dem Atheismusstreit um Johann Gottlieb Fichte zu den wichtigsten theologisch-philosophischen Kontroversen in der »Sattelzeit der Moderne« (Reinhart Koselleck). Im Unterschied zu den vorangegangenen Streitsachen steht in der Auseinandersetzung um den Theismus der Gottesbegriff selbst zur Debatte. Wurde dieser im Pantheismusstreit noch vorausgesetzt, im Streit um den Gott Fichtes problematisiert, so verliert der Gottesbegriff nun selbst seine Plausibilität. Die Denkbarkeit Gottes, seine gedankliche Ausweisbarkeit wird in dem Streit zwischen Jacobi und Schelling zum Problem. Das betrifft freilich auch die Frage nach der Grundlegung eines Systems der Philosophie. Im Streit um die göttlichen Dinge werden die Defizite der systematischen Begründung eines Systems des Wissens offensichtlich. Das macht den Streit so paradigmatisch. Fortan ist die Konstruktion eines Systems mit höheren Begründungsanforderungen konfrontiert. Der Band thematisiert die diversen Konzeptionen des Systembegriffs in der Zeit zwischen dem sogenannten Theismusstreit und dem Erscheinen von Hegels ›Rechtsphilosophie‹ im Jahre 1821.

The work of the later Schelling (in and after 1809) seems antithetical to that of Nietzsche: one a Romantic, idealist and Christian, the other Dionysian, anti-idealist and anti-Christian. Still, there is a very meaningful and educative dialogue to be found between Schelling and Nietzsche on the topics of reason, freedom and religion. Both of them start their philosophy with a similar critique of the Western tradition, which to them is overly dualist, rationalist and anti-organic (metaphysically, ethically, religiously, politically). In response, they hope to inculcate a more lively view of reality in which a new understanding of freedom takes center stage. This freedom can be revealed and strengthened through a proper approach to religion, one that neither disconnects from nor subordinates religion to reason. Religion is the dialogical other to reason, one that refreshes and animates our attempts to navigate the world autonomously. In doing so, Schelling and Nietzsche open up new avenues of thinking about (the relationship between) freedom, reason and religion.

Volume 12 of the International Yearbook of German Idealism is dedicated to the theme of logic. The volume begins with essays on Kant. Kant acknowledges that there are various kinds of logic, and he considers it necessary to distinguish his transcendental logic from other kinds of logic. The contributions of E. Carson, T. Rosenkoetter, C. Tolley and G. Zöller discuss Kant on different kinds of logic, and they examine developments in the logic of his critical philosophy. Logic of course plays a central role in Hegel’s philosophy as well. Among the most important interpretative tasks is that of exploring the aim, structure and content of his logic. We include essays on Hegel’s logic by S. Houlgate, L. Illetterati, R. Pippin and P. Redding. The role of logic in the systems of Fichte and Schelling is less obvious. The contributions of C. Asmuth, A. Nuzzo and S. Schwenzfeuer are above all dedicated to determining the place of logic within the systems of the two philosophers. The essays of our authors A. Koch and P. Schwab take a more comparative look at the role of logic within German idealism as a whole.
