La agricultura entra en el siglo XXI cargada de problemas nuevos, de incógnitas que no sabemos si vamos a ser capaces de resolver. Este libro está dedicado a uno de ellos: el proceso de desertificación de nuestras tierras. Los principales aspectos que relacionan la agricultura con la desertificación se abordan en él. Cuando nos ha sido posible esbozamos técnicas que pueden ayudar a mitigar el proceso. La combinación del cambio climático y de acciones antrópicas en condiciones semi-áridas o áridas está haciendo que la producción de biomasa sea cada vez menor, o se consiga utilizando insumos productivos en mayor proporción. Hemos logrado un desarrollo espectacular de la producción agraria en los últimos años del siglo XX, pero en muchas ocasiones ha sido a costa de un grave deterioro del medio natural. En este texto nos ocupamos de analizar este proceso. Los autores hemos tenido ocasión de estudiar este fenómeno fundamentalmente debido a nuestra participación en diferentes Proyectos de Investigación y Desarrollo que han sido financiados en la mayoría de los casos por la Unión Europea y han tenido como espacio físico para su realización la Cuenca Mediterránea, prestando especial atención a la Península Ibérica. El tema, aunque aborda aspectos en cierto sentido dramáticos para la humanidad, es absolutamente apasionante. Hoy nos enfrentamos con la necesidad de convertir los conocimientos adquiridos, en herramientas útiles para la sociedad. Nuestros conocimientos son escasos y dispersos, claramente desproporcionados a la envergadura del problema. Sin embargo, es preciso comenzar y ésa es la intención del texto que presentamos.

Over this last decade, the concept of Social Metabolism has gained prestige as a theoretical instrument for the required analysis, to such an extent that there are now dozens of researchers, hundreds of articles and several books that have adopted and use this concept. However, there is a great deal of variety in terms of definitions and interpretations, as well as different methodologies around this concept, which prevents the consolidation of a unified field of new knowledge. The fundamental aim of the book is to conduct a review of the past and present usage of the concept of social metabolism, its origins and history, as well as the main currents or schools that exist around this concept. At the same time, the reviews and discussions included are used by the authors as starting points to draw conclusions and propose a theory of socio-ecological transformations. The theoretical and methodological innovations of this book include a distinction of two types of metabolic processes: tangible and intangible; the analysis of the social metabolism at different scales (in space and time) and a theory of socio-ecological change overcoming the merely “systemic” or “cybernetic” nature of conventional approaches, giving special protagonism to collective action.
