Abteilungsinspektor Erich Oberbacher ist nach seiner Hüft-OP noch immer im Krankenstand, als er aus der Zeitung erfährt, dass im Bezirk Perg ein schrecklicher Mord passiert ist. Doch während Aschenbrenner im Verhör die Tat leugnet, wird ein weiterer Unternehmer, der Pabneukirchener Holzindustrielle Rudolf Schacherreiter, ebenfalls gefoltert und mit der Kreissäge geköpft tot aufgefunden. Oberbacher und sein Team sind ratlos. Noch dazu scheinen alle Verdächtigen ein felsenfestes Alibi und kein Motiv für die Morde zu haben. Bis es Oberbacher wie Schuppen von den Augen fällt und er - fast zu spät - die Zusammenhänge erkennt.
