Ada beberapa alasan mengapa buku kumpulan hasil wawancara ini ditampilkan ke khalayak pembaca. Pertama, setiap wawancara langsung mengandaikan jawaban spontan dari respondennya. Seorang yang memang tidak mempunyai kerangka pikir utuh, sudah barang tentu akan gelagapan menjawab kejaran pertanyaan. Logika yang dibangun akan tampak rancu, aluran pemikiran akan kelihatan tumpang tindih. Kalau sudah begini, jawaban improvisasi jelas tidak bisa mengatasi. Karena dasar pemikiran tidak bisa dibangun seketika. Kedua, setiap wawancara di sini hanya mengedepankan satu aspek saja dari perhatian luas Gus Dur. Ia hanya berupa penggalan-penggalan.

Civil Islam tells the story of Islam and democratization in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim nation. Challenging stereotypes of Islam as antagonistic to democracy, this study of courage and reformation in the face of state terror suggests possibilities for democracy in the Muslim world and beyond. Democratic in the early 1950s and with rich precedents for tolerance and civility, Indonesia succumbed to violence. In 1965, Muslim parties were drawn into the slaughter of half a million communists. In the aftermath of this bloodshed, a "New Order" regime came to power, suppressing democratic forces and instituting dictatorial controls that held for decades. Yet from this maelstrom of violence, repressed by the state and denounced by conservative Muslims, an Islamic democracy movement emerged, strengthened, and played a central role in the 1998 overthrow of the Soeharto regime. In 1999, Muslim leader Abdurrahman Wahid was elected President of a reformist, civilian government. In explaining how this achievement was possible, Robert Hefner emphasizes the importance of civil institutions and public civility, but argues that neither democracy nor civil society is possible without a civilized state. Against portrayals of Islam as inherently antipluralist and undemocratic, he shows that Indonesia's Islamic reform movement repudiated the goal of an Islamic state, mobilized religiously ecumenical support, promoted women's rights, and championed democratic ideals. This broadly interdisciplinary and timely work heightens our awareness of democracy's necessary pluralism, and places Indonesia at the center of our efforts to understand what makes democracy work.

The following book Social Justice: A Sketch of the West and Islamic World Experiences contains a collection of articles that may be read individually, each concerned with the same issues of social justice. The writers in this book originate from the Western and Islamic World’s countries. All have agreed to explore and contribute to understanding social justice in each pertinent countries’ experiences. The problems being addressed are either descriptive or valuational and, in most cases, are the combination of both. All articles presented in this collection are mainly a reexamination of social justice ideals from the authors’ viewpoints and experiences and how the ideals may be applicable and considered relevant to a particular problem faced by the respective countries. As its generic meaning is commonly recognized, all authors see that social justice is the most fundamental virtue, crucially providential, to be the basis of interpersonal relations ordering and establishing and maintaining a stable political society. Pada awalnya kehadiran pesantren hanyalah untuk menjawab kebutuhan masyarakat akan pembelajaran agama. Santri sebagai output produk pesantren menjadi penentu kredibilitas sebuah pesantren. Santri diharapkan mampu mentransformasikan ilmu yang diperoleh selama masa belajar kepada masyarakat di lingkungan tempat tinggalnya. Hal ini telah terbukti banyak lulusan pesantren yang menjadi kaum intelektual, politisi, maupun yang berkiprah di lembaga pemerintahan, dan pengusaha. Sekiranya hal ini sesuai dengan harapan KH. Abdurahman Wahid walaupun tidak seutuhnya. Pendidikan pesantren dalam perspektif KH. Abdurrahman Wahid adalah: adanyanya sistem tradisional yang menjelaskan tiga bentuk pemberdayaan pesantren yaitu: a). Pembangunan Intelektual, b). Pengembangan sumber daya manusia (SDM), c). Ekonomi. Dengan model tersebut, maka pesantren menjadi tidak mengeksiskan diri di tradisional saja, tetapi pesantren sudah dapat memberikan kontribusi kepada masyarakat dan bangsa.
