Olympic gold medallist and multiple world champion, Paul Goodison, explains why this book is important if you want to win races. He says: "To win sailboat races you need to sail the boat fast. This comes down to hours on the water training and tuning – there are few shortcuts to hours of practising on the water. To consistently win races you need to sail fast and smart – making the right decisions to sail the best course. If you are not the fastest boat, you are still able to win races and regattas by managing risk and sailing smart. This is where good tactics come in. But, unlike boatspeed, tactics may be learnt by thinking about each leg of the course and different situations from the comfort of your own home. Jon Emmett's new book, Tactics Made Simple, is a great tool to help fast track this learning." This book explains simply, through hundreds of diagrams, what tactics can be applied around the race track. Individual boats in each scenario are given names so that you can easily understand what they are doing. Individual chapters take you around the race course, from before you get on the water, through the pre-start, start, different legs and manoeuvres. Each section contains detailed advice for the beginner, intermediate and advanced sailor so you can just look at the level of tactics relevant to you. Ideal for dinghy sailors, there is also a wealth of advice that will benefit yachtsmen. This is a practical way to improve your racing results, whether starting out, moving up the club circuit or competing at national level and beyond. Tactical Patterns Made EasyTactics are very important in Chess. How to spot winning material and other tactics? Using text and 850+ diagrams, FIDE Master Bill Jordan shows you how. Chess has relatively easy rules but is potentially a game of great complexity. The complexity is achieved by the large number of ways the simple elements can be combined. The number of possibilities increases geometrically with the number of units on the board.Pattern recognitionThere are many tactical pattern which happen again and again in games. Skilled players are familiar with many patterns and themes, through both play and study. This familiarity allows players to spot tactics much quicker than they would otherwise. There is a strong correlation between playing strength and how quickly a player can find tactics. The book starts with a fresh look at the simple elements of chess and how they can be put together. Elements include the chessboard itself and the basic functions of the units. Types of patterns are explained. The last section contains a large number of common tactical patterns. Types of patterns include attack, checkmate, ways to draw and ways to win material. Drawing patterns include stalemate patterns and perpetual check patterns. Patterns involved in winning material include Forks, Pins, Skewers, Discoveries, Nets, Ties and Discoveries. Saves are also examined. This book includes many positions that have been collected for coaching purposes over many years. The book is designed to help the reader to quickly become familiar with many tactical patterns. It may also help refresh familiarity with tactical patterns that have been previously seen, but partly forgotten.PositionsThe positions have been invented. In many cases they have been simplified and have few units on the board which are not involved in tactic being presented. In many cases they are fragments of positions, one or more Kings may be missing. However they are are very similar to positions from actual play and are quite unlike composed positions. DiagramsIn all positions White moves first and White is playing up the board. Moves are numbered from the current position, not from the start of the game. The book uses standard chess notation, which is short Algebraic notation. It is desirable to know this. There are different ways you can read this book. You can treat the positions as puzzles. You can choose the move you would play and move to the next diagram to check whether you are correct or not. You can simply enjoy playing through through the positions, becoming familiar with a wide range of tactical patterns as you do so. You can quickly flip forwards (or backwards) through the sequence of moves in each position. You can combine both approaches. For example, during a first reading you could play through the positions. On a second reading you could see how many you can solve from the starting position. See my authors page for information about my background and other books.

With this book you'll find out how easy chess is to learn. The exposition is clear and informal and strikes a rather unique level. Whereas most introductory manuals are either sketchy and undeveloped or else lose the reader in a maze of technical detail, this volume is one of the very few intermediate accounts. It covers the most elementary procedures and also takes you through the development of basic strategic notions. Written by a well-known British master and chess correspondent, it packs an amazing amount of material into its pages, and it gives you a quick, easy-to-follow, full course of instruction. The first part of the book explains the rules, describes the pieces and their possible moves, and shows how games are won, lost, or drawn. Miscellaneous terms are defined. Numerous examples and crystal-clear diagrams illustrate the textual account and help give novices a firm grasp of fundamentals; beginners can read through these 30-some pages and then sit down and start to play immediately. The rest of the book concentrates on the development of skills by the use of general tactical principles. Barden handles the problems of openings effectively: he discusses actual game situations in detail and shows what and what not to do — and why; then he looks into two typical openings fairly thoroughly (the Hungarian Defense and the Queen's Gambit). The middle and endgame are also examined with respect to common situations and ways of dealing with them. The emphasis throughout on the isolation of patterns and recurrent positions (and away from memorization) gives the beginner greater understanding and flexibility. The final two chapters analyze a full game, telling why each move was made. No handier or more effective introduction is available in English. A brief study of this book and a few practice games will make you appreciate the enthusiasm of your friends and of hundreds of thousands all over the world for this fascinating pastime.

Better Simpler Strategy written by Felix Oberholzer-Gee and has been published by Harvard Business Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-20 with Business & Economics categories.

Named one of the best strategy books of 2021 by strategy+business Get to better, more effective strategy. In nearly every business segment and corner of the world economy, the most successful companies dramatically outperform their rivals. What is their secret? In Better, Simpler Strategy, Harvard Business School professor Felix Oberholzer-Gee shows how these companies achieve more by doing less. At a time when rapid technological change and global competition conspire to upend traditional ways of doing business, these companies pursue radically simplified strategies. At a time when many managers struggle not to drown in vast seas of projects and initiatives, these businesses follow simple rules that help them select the few ideas that truly make a difference. Better, Simpler Strategy provides readers with a simple tool, the value stick, which every organization can use to make its strategy more effective and easier to execute. Based on proven financial mechanics, the value stick helps executives decide where to focus their attention and how to deepen the competitive advantage of their business. How does the value stick work? It provides a way of measuring the two fundamental forces that lead to value creation and increased financial success—the customer's willingness-to-pay and the employee's willingness-to-sell their services to the business. Companies that win, Oberholzer-Gee shows, create value for customers by raising their willingness-to-pay, and they provide value for talent by lowering their willingness-to-sell. The approach, proven in practice, is entirely data driven and uniquely suited to be cascaded throughout the organization. With many useful visuals and examples across industries and geographies, Better, Simpler Strategy explains how these two key measures enable firms to gauge and improve their strategies and operations. Based on the author's sought-after strategy course, this book is your must-have guide for making better strategic decisions.
