The Psychology Of Touch written by Morton A. Heller and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-12 with Psychology categories.

Designed to make research on touch understandable to those not specifically involved in tactile research, this book provides broad coverage of the field. It includes material on sensory physiology and psychophysics, thermal sensibility, pain, pattern participation, sensory aids, and tactile perception in blind people. While the volume is important for researchers in the area of touch, it should also prove valuable to a broad audience of experimental and educational psychologists, and health professionals. The book should also be of interest to scientists in perception, cognition, and cognitive science, and can be used as a supplementary reader for courses in sensation and perception.

The present study investigated whether or not visual illusions can be perceived in the tactile sense. The study employed such well-known illusions as the Poggendorff (POi), Horizontal-Vertical (HVi), and the Muller-Lyer (MLi) illusions. These figures were glued onto white foam board so the illusions could be explored both visually and in the tactile sense (tactile participants were blindfolded). It was expected that these geometric illusions would be experienced in both the tactile and visual senses, supporting the notion that illusions, though multimodal, are not amodal. Prior research suggests that not all illusions are experienced equally intensely, or always in the same direction, for both modalities. For example, prior research suggests that the POi can be experienced in the opposite direction. The opposite illusion effect for the POi occurs when the veritably aligned diagonal line appears higher, as compared with the typical visual illusion where it appears lower. Although no literature addresses the vividness of visual imagery as impacting tactile illusion effects to date, this study examined it as a covariate. Results indicated there were significant differences between the ways blindfolded and sighted participants experienced illusion effects with the HVi and MLi; however, no difference was found with the POi. Respondents were more likely to report opposite illusion effects only with the POi. No significant magnitude differences were found on any of the illusions between the two groups. Results revealed that vividness of imagery was not related to illusion effects. Future research should further examine tactile illusions with congenitally blind subjects for more direct evidence of modality processing. The results highlight the importance of understanding how blind individuals navigate their world.

Perceptual Ecology written by Edward C. Carterette and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-24 with Science categories.

Handbook of Perception, Volume X: Perceptual Ecology, deals with perceptual aspects of the study of interaction of persons with their environment. The book is organized into six parts. Part I examines an ecological approach to the perceptual systems and cultural differences in perception. Part II is devoted to impaired perception and action. It includes studies on perception by the deaf and blind, and outlines the intellectual principles necessary for understanding sensory aids. Part III on aesthetics covers central problem of aesthetic theories and the generation and measurement of aesthetic forms. Part IV on architecture, music, art, and cinema discusses the perceptual aspects of architecture; the psychology of music; and the perception of art and motion pictures. Part V deals with the role of olfactory hedonics in perfumery and the assessment and abatement of noxious odors; and food habits, gastronomy, and analysis of flavors and foods. Part VI focuses on parapsychology. It reviews experimental evidence on telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and psychokinesis in order to assess the status of parapsychology and show why it is paradoxy, outside of accepted opinion, after some 100 years of psychic research.

Touching For Knowing written by Yvette Hatwell and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-09-09 with Psychology categories.

The dominance of vision is so strong in sighted people that touch is sometimes considered as a minor perceptual modality. However, touch is a powerful tool which contributes significantly to our knowledge of space and objects. Its intensive use by blind persons allows them to reach the same levels of knowledge and cognition as their sighted peers. In this book, specialized researchers present the recent state of knowledge about the cognitive functioning of touch. After an analysis of the neurophysiology and neuropsychology of touch, exploratory manual behaviors, intramodal haptic (tactual-kinesthetic) abilities and cross-modal visual-tactual coordination are examined in infants, children and adults, and in non-human primates. These studies concern both sighted and blind persons in order to know whether early visual deprivation modifies the modes of processing space and objects. The last section is devoted to the technical devices favoring the school and social integration of the young blind: Braille reading, use of raised maps and drawings, “sensory substitution” displays, and new technologies of communication adapted for the blind.
