Tafsir al-Qur'anul Majid An-NUur ini dikerjakan oleh Teungku Muhammad Hasbi Ash Shiddiqy (wafat 1975) sejak tahun 1952 sampai dengan 1961 di sela-sela kesibukannya mengajar, memimpin Fakultas, menjadi anggota Konstituante dan kegiatan-kegiatan lainnya. Hidupnya yang sarat dengan beban itu tidak memberi peluang baginya untuk secara konsisten mengikuti tahap-tahap kerja yang lazim dilakukan oleh penulis-penulis profesional. Dengan bekal pengetahuan, semangat dan dambaannya untuk menghadirkan sebuah kitab Tafsir dalam bahasa Indonesia yang tidak hanya sekedar terjemahan, ia mendiktekan naskah kitab tafsirnya ini kepada seorang pengetik dan langsung menjadi naskah siap cetak. Memang ketika ia mendiktekan naskah itu, di atas meja kerjanya penuh terhampar buku-buku referensi dan catatan-catatannya pada kepingan-kepingan kertas. Itulah barangkali yang menjadi salah satu penyebab terjadi pengulangan informasi, penekanan atau maksud ayat, uraian yang tidak terpadu dan penomoran catatan kaki yang tidak mengikuti metode penulisan karya ilmiah dalam kitab Tafsir al-Qur'anul Majid An-Nuur ini. Beliau adalah seorang yang terlalu akrab dengan sumber bacaan berbahasa Arab. Karena itu, struktur dan istilah bahasa Arab terbawa serta dalam karya tulisnya yang bisa berakibat menjadi sulit dipahami oleh pembaca yang tidak menguasai bahasa Arab. Padahal kepada merekalah kitab ini ditujukan. Selain itu, bahasa Indonesia tahun 1990-an telah pula mengalami pengembangan dari bahasa yang dipakai pada tahun 1950-an ketika kitab ini dikerjakan. Ini menjadi salah satu alasan pula mengapa kitab ini yang dibaca oleh peminat dan pengkaji tafsir al-Qur'an di Indonesia dan Malaysia, memerlukan suntingan untuk disesuaikan dengan pertumbuhan bahasa pada masa kini. Penyunting kitab tafsir al-Qur'an ini, adalah salah seorang pengetik dan pengoreksi cetak cobanya. Dengan kesadaran seorang bodoh yang ingin belajar, ketika sedang mengetik seringkali pula bertanya tentang hal-hal yang belum jelas baginya. Setiap kali dilontarkan pertanyaan, penulis menghentikan diktenya dan memberikan penjelasan. Tak jarang pula terjadi diskusi kecil antara penulis dan pengetik. Dari keterlibatan penyunting dalam proses pengerjaan kitab tafsir ini telah memberi peluang baginya untuk belajar tafsir dan memahami jalan pikiran serta pendirian penulis.

Betapapun tafsir ini telah ditulis oleh pengarangnya pada dekade enam puluhan (ditulis dari tahun 1952-1961), tapi tafsir ini masih relevan dibaca sampai saat ini. Dicetak ulangnya tafsir ini samapi pada edisi ke 3 memberi makna bahwa tafsir ini masih disukai oleh banyak pembaca di tanah air. Saya ikut bergembira bahwa tafsir ini di cetak kembali dengan penampilan yang lebih menarik.
