Karakter dari penafsiran simbolis Ibn ‘Arabī dan Al-Qushayrī berbeda. Jika Ibn ‘Arabī sangat simbolis dan sukar dipahami orang awam yang tidak mempunyai dasar keilmuan tasawuf dan filsafat, sedangkan Al-Qushayrī di bawah level Ibn ‘Arabī dan cenderung masih bisa dipahami. Bahkan membandingkan dua kitab yang digunakan untuk melihat penafsiran simbolis Ibn ‘Arabī saja sudah berbeda. Dalam kitabnya Tafsīr Ibn ‘Arabī dan al-Futūḥāt al-Makiyyah terlihat sangat simbolis. Hal ini akan terlihat dari penafsirannya tentang Al-Anbiyā’ ayat 30 yang membicarakan tentang langit dan bumi dulunya bersatu kemudian berpisah. Ibn ‘Arabī dalam kitabnya tersebut menafsirkan langit dan bumi sebagai penciptaan manusia di mana berasal dari satu tetes mani (nuṭfah) yang kemudian berpisah adalah maksudnya berkembang muncul anggota tubuh yang lain. Bahkan dalam al-Futūḥāt Ibn ‘Arabī menyinggung nama-nama zodiak yang ada dua belas. Sedangkan dalam penafsirannya dalam kitab Raḥmah min al-Raḥmān fi Tafsīr wa Ishārāt al-Qur’ān masih menyinggung tentang penciptaan alam bahwa yang dimaksud dipisah bumi dan langit adalah dipisah menjadi tujuh pada langit dan bumi. Untuk yang terakhir dalam penafsirannya Al-Qushayrī dalam Laṭā’if al-Ishārāt mengaitkan dengan keraguan orang kafir atas kekuasaan Allah dapat membangkitkan orang yang sudah mati pada Hari Kiamat nanti. Kemudian hal itu dijawab Allah dengan menyatakan bahwa dirinya mampu untuk membuat langit dan bumi apalagi membangkitkan orang yang sudah mati. Jadi Al-Qushayrī membahas kekuasaan Allah dan masih dalam konteks makna zahir yaitu penciptaan alam. Meskipun sama-sama membahas bahwa air yang dimaksud dalam ayat tersebut adalah nuṭfah sebagai asal dari makhluk hidup. Perbedaan makna simbolis dalam penafsirannya tidak lepas dari karakter dari pemikiran sufi keduanya. Ibn ‘Arabī sebagai pembesar dalam mazhab tafsir naẓarī membuatnya mempunyai penafsiran yang cukup rumit dan terkadang membutuhkan penjelasan lebih lanjut tentang istilah yang ia gunakan. Karena seringkali mengaitkan dengan teori-teori yang ia adopsi dari filsafat. Makanya Fahd mengkategorikan penafsiran Ibn ‘Arabī sebagai tafsīr al-ramzī (tafsir simbolis) yang ungkapannya sangat simbolis dan sukar dipahami, bahkan terkadang dekat dengan shaṭaḥāt yang dilakukan oleh para sufi ekstrim, seperti al-Busṭāmī dan al-Ḥallaj. Sedangkan Al-Qushayrī, banyak dikenal sebagai tokoh tasawuf yang moderat sehingga dalam pemikirannya pun cenderung tasawuf amali yang selalu berpegang teguh pada amalan-amalan syariat. Makanya dalam penafsiran simbolisnya pun tidak terlihat seperti Ibn ‘Arabī yang sukar dipahami, namun cenderung masih bisa dipahami untuk orang yang pemahaman tasawufnya tidak terlalu tinggi. Al-Qushayrī sepertinya terlihat ingin penafsirannya juga dipahami oleh masyarakat pada umumnya dengan membawa nuansa tasawuf yang bisa mendekatkan diri kepada Allah. Ia menekankan untuk mencapai puncak spiritual maka harus menjalani seluruh amalan syariat terlebih dahulu dan tidak ada jalan pintas untuk mencapai tingkat tertinggi tersebut, bahkan para nabi sekalipun.
