Eberhard von Groote war Sohn einer Kölner Adelsfamilie, studierter Jurist, städtischer Amtsträger und ambitionierter Germanist. Sein Tagebuch aus den Jahren 1815 bis 1824 ist eine reichhaltige Quelle zur Geschichte und Kultur Kölns und des Rheinlandes in dieser Zeit. Anschaulich geben Grootes Aufzeichnungen Einblick in seine Lebenswelt und sein gesellschaftliches Netzwerk, das Hunderte von Personen umfasste: Staatsmänner, Regierungskritiker und deren Frauen, Wissenschaftler, berühmte Salonnièren, Künstler und Kunstsammler – unter ihnen Ferdinand Franz Wallraf, General August Neidhardt von Gneisenau, Prinzessin Marianne von Preußen und Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Der zweite Band der Tagebuch-Edition umfasst seine Aufzeichnungen aus dem Jahr 1816, einschließlich der von ihm verfassten Briefe und Schriften. Dieses erste Friedensjahr nach einer langen Periode von verheerenden Kriegen war voller Herausforderungen. Gerade in den Rheinlanden vollzogen sich durch die Eingliederung in den preußischen Staat entscheidende Veränderungen. Für eine kurze Periode schien vieles möglich zu sein: eine Wiederherstellung alter Strukturen oder der Anbruch einer "neuen Zeit". Der junge Eberhard von Groote war hierbei ein präziser, manchmal kritischer, mal naiver Beobachter, der sich aber auch engagiert für seine Stadt einsetzte.

A history of Germans’ attempts to transform society through art in an age of revolution. For German philosophers at the turn of the nineteenth century, beautiful works of art acted as beacons of freedom, instruments of progress that could model and stimulate the moral autonomy of their beholders. Amid the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, Germans struggled to uphold these ideals as they contended with the destruction of art collections, looting, and questions about cultural property. As artworks fell prey to the violence they were supposed to transcend, some began to wonder how art could deliver liberation if it could also quickly become a spoil of war. Alice Goff considers a variety of works—including forty porphyry columns from the tomb of Charlemagne, the Quadriga from the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the Laocoön group from Rome, a medieval bronze reliquary from Goslar, a Last Judgment from Danzig, and the mummified body of an official from the Rhenish hamlet of Sinzig—following the conflicts over the ownership, interpretation, conservation, and exhibition of German collections during the Napoleonic period and its aftermath.

Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869)--court physician to the king of Saxony--was a naturalist, amateur painter, and theoretician of landscape painting whose Nine Letters on Landscape Painting is an important document of early German romanticism and an elegant appeal for the integration of art and science. Carus was inspired by and had contacts with the greatest German intellectuals of his day. Carus prefaced his work with a letter from his correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was his primary mentor in both science and art. His writings also reflect, however, the influence of the German natural philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, especially Schelling's notion of a world soul, and the writings of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Carus played a role in the revolution in landscape painting taking place in Saxony around Caspar David Friedrich. The first edition appears here in English for the first time.

The Danish neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844), who lived most of his life in Rome, was not only one of Europe’s most soughtafter artists; he was also a collector. In addition to his own works and drawings, he built extensive collections of paintings, prints, drawings and books – and of ancient artefacts from Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquity: coins, lockets, containers, vases, lamps, fragments of sculpture and more. He also acquired a large collection of plaster casts, primarily after ancient sculptures and reliefs, but also of works dating from the Renaissance and up until his own lifetime. Thanks to Thorvaldsen’s bequest to the city of Copenhagen, his birthplace, all of these collections are still largely intact and well preserved at his museum. Home to a total of 657 plaster casts, the Thorvaldsen Museum’s cast collection is unique for several reasons: The collection offers us insight into the sculptor’s working methods and the development of his work because it served a clear function as an image bank of forms, motifs and subjects for Thorvaldsen’s own endeavours. Furthermore, the dual fact that the collection is so well preserved and was established over a relatively brief period of time makes it a valuable example illuminating the trade and distribution of plaster casts during the first half of the nineteenth century. These areas of study form the central focal point of Volume I of this publication. Volume II contains a catalogue of the individual objects in the cast collection, while Volume III collects the overviews, inventories, concordances and primary sources referred to in the first two volumes. Arising out of many years of study of Thorvaldsen’s cast collection conducted by their author, the classical archaeologist Jan Zahle, these books contain comprehensive source material from the period, much of it previously unknown.
