A Reference Grammar Of Puyuma An Austronesian Language Of Taiwan written by Stacy Fang-Ching Teng and has been published by Pacific Linguistics this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Foreign Language Study categories.

"The Puyuma people reside in southeastern Taiwan in Taitung City and Peinan Township in Taitung County. There are still fourteen extant Formosan (Austronesian) languages in Taiwan, but only thirteen indigenous groups are officially recognised by the Taiwanese government. The present study investigates the Nanwang dialect of the Puyuma language, spoken by the people in Nanwang and Paoshang Suburbs of Taitung City in southern Taiwan. The aim of this grammar is to describe the phonology and morphosyntax of Puyuma. The work is descriptive in nature, and the theoretical framework employed is Basic Linguistic Theory (BLT). BLT emphasises the need to describe each language in its own terms, rather than imposing on it concepts derived from other languages. Thus, in this study, the author abandons traditional terms used by linguists studying Philippine-type languages, such as agent focus, patient focus, locative focus, or instrumental focus, and replaces them with the terms like transitive and intransitive that are more familiar to most of the worlds linguists."--Provided by publisher.

Southern Min (also known as Hokkien or Minnan) is a major branch of Chinese spoken mainly in Fujian and Taiwan, but also in Guangdong, Hainan and Hong Kong, as well as in many countries of Southeast Asia. Highly conservative in its linguistic profile, it is considered by many scholars to be a living language fossil due to the preservation of many archaic features that reflect its long-lasting history and culture. Yet to date there has been no comprehensive study of Southern Min using a typological framework, as the tendency is to base analyses on the model of Mandarin Chinese, the standard language. This grammar aims to present a systematic description of the Hui'an variety of Southern Min, mainly based on data collected via naturally occurring conversation. The volume includes four parts: nominal structure, predicate structure, clause structure and complex sentences, as well as a brief overview of phonology. It will have great appeal for heritage speakers, graduate students and scholars in both Chinese linguistics and typology.

Taiwanese and the closely related Amoy Hokkien dialects are collectively the most widely spoken dialects of the Hokkien group. The Hokkien along with distantly related Teochew are among the most widely spoken non-Mandarin Chinese languages around the world alongside Cantonese, Hakka, and Shanghainese. Mandarin Chinese is still most widely spoken of all, and most written and spoken Chinese instruction is in Standard Mandarin. Each Chinese language/dialect uses Chinese characters and has a set of rules for pronunciation based on the context of how each character is used. However, with the estimated eight thousand to fifty thousand Chinese characters that do exist, there are still many colloquial terms where the given language's syntax for Chinese characters do not fit how they are spoken. Additionally, unique to each Chinese language/dialect group exists coined Chinese characters that are specific to the respective group. In such situations, Romanization is a more feasible alternative to written Chinese characters in learning spoken language because it helps preserve not only spoken language grammar but also colloquial terms that may not be currently be expressed in written Chinese form. The Handbook of Taiwanese Romanization focuses on the phonology of Taiwanese and Amoy Hokkien. It covers five Taiwanese Romanization methods used in currently available Taiwanese language materials for English, Japanese, and Mandarin "Chinese" speakers. This book is for the native Taiwanese speakers who live overseas and are unfamiliar with Chinese characters but want to learn how to express their mother tongue through reading and writing. It is also a tool to aid native speakers in teaching their own children. This book focuses on Taiwanese and Amoy Hokkien but provides a foundation in phonics and tones that can be applied to other Hokkien dialects.

This book presents pioneering accounts by leading scholars of twelve central aspects of the grammar of Chinese languages. Deploying a combination of historical and typological approaches it shows the variety and diversity of Chinese languages as well as the extent to which these and their dialects differ from Mandarin. Each author provides full background information on the language or dialect under consideration including its historical and contemporary context. In her introduction Dr Chappell describes the history and geography of Chinese languages. "A must-read... a vital reassessment of the field which shows there is much to be learned by integrating historical study with dialectal investigation." Journal of Linguistics "Chappell combines typological observations of Sinitic and non-Sinitic languages with general linguistic theory in a most satisfying fashion... A very welcome, refeshing and exciting contribution." Cahiers de Linguistique Hilary Chappell is senior lecturer in linguistics at La Trobe University. Her published work includes The Grammar of Inalienability (with William McGregor, Amsterdam, 1995). She is currently writing a book on the typology of Chinese languages,
