Einer Darstellung der Quellenlage sowie einer Problematisierung der unterschiedlichen editorischen Praktiken Cowells, Kirkpatricks und anderen Herausgebern folgt eine detaillierte Analyse der Study Nr. 23, die viele der auch in anderen Werken vorkommenden Techniken enth„lt. Bei der Analyse werden u.a. Elemente der pitch-class set theory verwendet, deren Anwendbarkeit auf die Musik des frhen 20.
