Taking Control argues that neither side in the Brexit debate really understood the European Union or what was involved in reclaiming Britain's sovereignty. The EU is neither a supranational nanny state, nor an internationalist peace project. It is the means by which Europe’s elites transformed their own states in order to rule the void where representative politics used to be. Leaving the EU is a necessary but not sufficient step towards closing the chasm between rulers and ruled. This book makes the democratic case for national sovereignty, arguing for a radical, forward-looking reconstitution of the British nation-state through strengthening representative democracy. It is essential for anyone who wonders why British politics is so dysfunctional and who wants to do better.

When I feel like I'm losing it, how do I stop the rollercoaster? We all want to feel in control - to feel good, reduce pain, and take pleasure in our lives. All too often, though, we end up instead with one of the most destructive afflictions of modern life: stress - or, more accurately, distress. Not all stress is harmful, in fact some is positively beneficial and essential to our survival and happiness - the good stress. Effective control and stress management is about handling life in ways that help us minimise distress while capitalising on the benefits of good stress. In the rational step-by-step manner that characterises his previous books, Wayne Froggatt applies the highly effective method of cognitive-behaviour therapy to explain: ? why human beings experience loss of control ? what stress really is ? the 12 principles of personal control and stress management ? a set of practical skills to take control and make stress work for you.By following his methods, you will be able to diagnose your own stress and develop powerful strategies for making the most of whatever life throws at you. Wayne Froggatt is the author of two other internationally successful books, FearLess and Choose to be Happy, and has written previously on this topic in GoodStress: the life that can be yours. the Executive Director of the New Zealand Centre for Cognitive Behaviour therapy and an Associate Fellow of New York's Albert Ellis Institute, he specialises in health counselling and psychotherapy and lectures in cognitive-behaviour therapy at the Eastern Institute of technology.

Written by Paul Garvey, Taking Control 2: How to prepare for Ofsted under the education inspection framework equips teachers, subject leaders and school leaders with the tools and know-how to enable them to prepare for their next inspection with confidence. Distilled from Paul's 11 years' experience as an Ofsted inspector, this practical handbook builds on its predecessor Taking Control to help your school ready itself for inspection under the 2019 education inspection framework (EIF). It features many first-hand experiences of inspection under the updated EIF and highlights the methodology of inspection - including 'deep dives' and the 90-minute phone call - combined with top tips to ensure you get the best out of the assessments. Paul also provides a range of effective dialogic tools to help you compile a persuasive self-evaluation form (SEF) in order to convince the inspection team of the true quality of your school's provision and ensure that you're awarded the deserved grade. The book will alleviate some of the worries surrounding inspection, helping schools to avoid piling unnecessary work onto staff, and encourages leaders to feel much more confident about the process. It also looks at inspection from an inspector's point of view - sharing their methodology pre, during and post inspection - and includes a wealth of experiences from both primary and secondary schools of actual inspections under the 2019 framework. Furthermore, Paul furnishes his guidance with highlighted references to paragraphs and pages in the section 5 and section 8 handbooks, making it easier for you investigate the detail further, should you need to do so. Suitable for head teachers, senior leadership team members, subject leaders, classroom teachers, governors and all stakeholders in mainstream schools in England.

Last call for humanity? Americans can now secure or destroy the world. From Anthony Barnett, the creator and former editor-in-chief of openDemocracy, comes this blazing response to the confrontation between Trumpism and Biden in America, that sets out how the future of humankind is at stake. On 6 January 2021, Donald Trump tried to seize the US presidency by force. His aim: to consolidate his nativist rule. He was, and still is, supported by tens of millions of Americans. In response, Joe Biden's administration promises a massive economic shift while a decisive contest unfolds over voter suppression. This contest is of epochal importance. As the future of humankind passes through the prism of the most powerful country in the world, Barnett reflects on the stark, limited spectrum of possible outcomes. He shows that the frustration of Trumpism is thanks to the decades long resistance to market fundamentalism. But it remains divided and incoherent. It is time for the left to embrace an open, ecological politics or the world will be subordinated to the regimes of the Iron Men and their successors.

Taking Control of Writing Your Thesis offers a clear account of the how, what, why and who of working together so that you can produce, finish and submit a successful thesis. Guccione is a Thesis Coach and Thesis Mentoring Programme Designer and is currently researching the barriers to thesis completion; Wellington has supervised and examined numerous dissertations at MA and doctoral level. They draw on these experiences throughout in providing you with expert guidance for your thesis, informed by real student testimonies and with 'Points to Ponder' and a wealth of online resources to support you along the way. Guccione and Wellington show that planning, writing and support for thesis writers is a collaborative venture but also one which you can take ownership of and manage. They show that there are ways to become more connected to what and who you need, and explore the collegial and peer-support structures that are there to be utilised. They situate the student within an educational context viewing them not as the lone researcher able or not able, skilled or unskilled, but as the navigator of the writing process. The authors draw on their experience to provide ways of thinking, and tools for empowering students to feel more in control of the practices of writing about research.
