Charles and Mary Lamb, brother and sister, collaborated on narrative versions of 20 plays in their ''Tales From Shakespeare.'' The following Tales are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare, for which purpose his words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story, diligent are has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote: therefore, words introduced into our language since his time have been as far as possible avoided. The following plays are recounted here: The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Winter's Tale, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Merchant of Venice, Cymbeline, King Lear, Macbeth, All's Well That Ends Well, The Taming of the Shrew, The Comedy of Errors, Measure for Measure, Twelfth Night; or, What You Will, Timon of Athens, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, Othello, Pericles, and Prince of Tyre.

Suitable for students, researchers, thespians, and general readers, Tales for Shakespeare is an anthology of source stories behind seven of Shakespeareâ (TM)s most beloved, frequently studied, and regularly performed plays. It begins with a general introduction examining Shakespeareâ (TM)s creative process and the assumptions about creativity shared by writers and readers of his age. It asks whether or not Shakespeare was a plagiarist, before showing how even posing this question requires extensive historical and critical framing. The full texts of seven primary source stories are then presented, all in modern spelling and punctuation, with glosses and notes. Each story is preceded by a concise introduction which, like the general introduction, is written for students and a range of other readers. The volume includes questions for each text, a general glossary, and a list of recommended further reading. A new translation of a source story for The Merchant of Venice is also included.

Tales from Shakespeare Charles & Mary Lamb The book is designed to make the stories of Shakespeare's plays familiar to the young. Mary Lamb was responsible for the comedies, while Charles wrote the tragedies; they wrote the preface between them. It being midnight, Romeo with his companions departed; but they soon missed him, for, unable to stay away from the house where he had left his heart, he leaped the wall of an orchard which was at the back of Juliet's house. Here he had not been long, ruminating on his new love, when Juliet appeared above at a window, through which her exceeding beauty seemed to break like the light of the sun in the east; and the moon, which shone in the orchard with a faint light, appeared to Romeo as if sick and pale with grief at the superior lustre of this new sun.

Tales from Shakespeare is characterized by almost fairytale-like plot devices-complications arising from identical twins, magical forests, ghosts and witches, and foolish kings. The prose renditions of fourteen comedies and six tragedies are just as captivating for adults. Far from being mere plot summaries, the Tales closely follow the plays, frequently incorporating Shakespeare's exact language into the narratives and refusing to impose simplistic moral conclusions on the often-messy philosophical universe of Shakespearean drama.

"This little gem of a book was probably the first introduction to Shakespeare that most readers have had as children.Tales from Shakespeare was written in 1807 by a young clerk called Charles Lamb in the offices of the East India Company. Lamb co-authored them with his beloved sister Mary. The pair lived together for life, having gone through immense trauma caused by mental illness and tragedy. However, far from being a melancholy duo, they led an active and ample social life in the company of some of the literary greats of the Romantic movement of the 19th century. His glittering circle included contemporary poets like Coleridge, Wordsworth, Southey and Leigh Hunt, the Chinese scholar Thomas Manning, political philosophers like William Godwin and his daughter the famous creator of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, and essayists like William Hazlitt. Charles Lamb also wrote excellent essays (compiled in a volume titled The Essays of Elia) and tried his hand at poetry and drama. Their regular Wednesday evening dinners were the gathering place for the best literary minds of the time.
