For over two decades, Brigham Young University was the dominant football team in the Western Athletic Conference and one of the best in the western United States. The Cougars' innovative passing game made them a feared and fabled opponent. Originally an unheralded private college, hard against the slopes of the Wasatch Mountains, BYU was best known for its high-scoring basketball program. That was before LaVell Edwards arrived. Along the way, legends arose. Some were remarkable players, noted for their ability to perform in difficult circumstances. Others were known more for their locker-room pranks and off-field idiosyncrasies. Tales from the BYU Sidelines unveils the characters behind the helmets, as well as the details behind the big plays. It also chronicles some of the legendary stories surrounding the program. Like the time Edwards drove to Idaho Falls, Idaho for a speaking engagement, only to find he was 163 miles off the mark. And the day Jim McMahon -- Mad Mac himself -- swung from the balcony of a high-rise hotel in Honolulu, right into the room of his favorite wide receiver. There's something comical about the image of assistant coach Roger "The Creature" French, lying flat on his stomach during a game, hoping to get a better look at the first-down yardage. Steve Young's bowl game-winning pass reception looked brilliant. But it made Edwards cringe. Big lab test coming up for a couple of players? No problem. Just bring a shark cadaver along on the plane. It happened. Here, then, are the adventures of the great and the not-so-great, the colorful and the clownish, the champions and the chumps, detailed by award-winning Salt Lake sports columnist Brad Rock. Some say you just had to be there to appreciate the moment. In a sense, now you can say you have been. Book jacket.

During an association with the Washington State football program that started in 1977, Jim Walden established a foundation of competitive expectations that helped spur the success of contemporary Cougar teams. Walden’s 1981 Cougars broke a 51-year bowl drought, and with victories in three of his last five Apple Cup games against Washington, Walden finally leveled the field with WSU’s cross-state rivals. Walden’s teams beat every opponent in the Pac-10 Conference at least once, squaring off against powerhouses USC, UCLA, and Washington despite a deficit in resources that he once described as “having to fight battles every Saturday with a really short sword.” He kidded and sparred with coaches like Don James, John Robinson, and Terry Donahue, while ticking off a few others with his outspokenness. He offered his opinions so frequently and frankly that his university president had “The Walden Release” printed and ready as a disclaimer for the press: “The opinions of Coach Walden do not necessarily reflect the stance of the WSU administration.” In Tales from the Washington State Cougars Sideline, the stories cover players and coaches alike, including Jack “The Throwin’ Samoan” Thompson, the colorful “Lone Star” Dietz, Bill Doba, and many more. Walden reveals the effective strategies and the flubs and tells what really happened on the field and in the locker rooms. He also shares the ways he was able to coax prospects into coming to remote Pullman and what he was really screaming at officials all those times. Walden tells his stories the way he coached—all out and nothing held back, with wit and humor.

How bad was Kansas State football when Bill Snyder took over as head coach? The story goes, once upon a time... if you got caught speeding in Manhattan, you didn't get a speeding ticket--you got a football ticket. If you got caught twice? They made you go to the game. While that may be an exaggeration, it's only a slight one. K-State was the worst college football program in the country and hadn't won a game in two years. Oh, how things have changed. Snyder's Wildcats now are regarded as one of the top programs in the country. The Wildcats are regulars in the national rankings, share the best overall record in Big XII Conference history and own the conference's best record on the road. Through the rise to prominence since Snyder's arrival in 1989, the constant has been change. There have been four athletics directors, five sports information directors, three Voices of the Wildcats, and well over 30 assistant coaches. But there's been only one color analyst for Wildcat football--Stan Weber. The former K-State starter at safety and quarterback has seen every play of the Bill Snyder era. And who else, besides Snyder himself, can say that? Stroll through the pages of Stan Weber's Tales from the Kansas State Sideline, and learn the stories behind the stories. Weber will tell first-hand experiences of the events that took K-State football from the outhouse to the penthouse. You'll hear Weber's recollections of some of the great games, like the Wildcats' first victory over Oklahoma in 23 years and the first KSU victory in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 35 years. And, he will share his insights into the personalities of many of K-State's heroes of the Snyder era. Sit back, relax and enjoy StanWeber's Tales from the Kansas State Sideline by Stan Weber with David Smale. Purple attire is required.

From Joe Montana's heroics to Rudy's theatrics, Notre Dame football in the second half of the 20th century was always entertaining and more often than not successful. In Gerry Faust's Tales from the Notre Dame Sideline, former head coach Gerry Faust, Notre Dame sports information director John Heisler, and longtime beat writer Bob Logan combine to take readers where even a rare Notre Dame Stadium ticket cannot--into the locker room and onto the sideline of college football's most storied program. The tales begin with Notre Dame's return to prominence in the 1960s and '70s during the Era of Ara, when head coach Ara Parseghian boasted an .836 winning percentage while leading the Irish to two national championships. Then fans will read about Dan Devine picking up where Parseghian left off, winning another national title in 1977. The tales eventually turn to Faust's years under the dome, a period filled with great stories but no national championships. Then comes Lou Holtz, the ever-concerned sideline wizard who led the Irish to their last national title in 1988. Fans will also hear about the Bob Davie era and the team's first two seasons under new head coach Tyrone Willingham There are fascinating and humorous tales of some of the most famous players ever to strap on a gold-painted helmet, from Joe Theismann and Ross Browner to modern names like Montana, Chris Zorich, Tim Brown, Jerome Bettis, and Arnaz Battle. Gerry Faust's Tales from the Notre Dame Sideline is sure to be a fun read for anyone who has ever cheered for the Fighting Irish.

University of Miami football is more than national championships, thirty-game winning streaks, and being a pipeline to the NFL. It’s the Gator Flop, defeating Tulane on a fifth down, and playing three games in eight days. It’s converting third and 44 against Notre Dame, Michael Irvin talking smack with Florida State’s Deion Sanders, and Vinny Testaverde being sacked by hamburgers. It’s the Jet Lag Kids playing seven road games in one season, including one in Tokyo, and it’s the Ibis mascot being arrested on the field in Tallahassee and being nicked by a bullet on Bourbon Street. Tales from the Miami Hurricanes Sideline is a collection of the greatest anecdotes and stories ever told about ’Canes football. In this newly updated edition, Jim Martz, who has covered the team for more than three decades, chronicles the ups, downs, and sideways of this spirited program that has produced five national championship teams under four different coaches since 1983. They have won under charismatic coaches and under low-key coaches. More than anything, they have won with colorful players. In an age of parity and just a few years removed from the program nearly being dropped, the Hurricanes have defied the odds and become a dynasty of modern college football.
