"A fascinating peek inside the mind of one seeking to rescue the world from its own insanity." Following a career in domestic law enforcement, the author traveled to Liberia in West Africa to run US Embassy diplomatic security operations. Before he could get his bearings he found himself engulfed in bloody civil war in Liberia that exposed him to horrors that would stretch the boundaries of believability to the limits. His struggles to adapt and survive the revolution in Liberia and the two that awaited him in Gambia and Sierra Leone altered the way he viewed the world forever. He shares that evolution of perspective in this memoire with incredible imagery and thought-provoking detail and analysis.

This is the story of one man's service in the British South Africa Police of Rhodesia during his service of nearly fifteen years, between the years 1965 and 1979, and in many ways forms a sequel to the author's book Mad Dog Killers. The struggle to keep Rhodesia out of black nationalist hands started in late 1964 and ended with the Mugabe regime in 1982. It is also a story of a policeman engaged in that war as a member of the paramilitary BSAP Support unit, the Police Anti-Terrorist Unit and as an ordinary member of the force that had always been designated the country's first line of defense. Most of the service was on remote rural district stations, often in the middle of the "front line". The account tells of one man's learning to be a policeman and a police public prosecutor and about the eccentricities of some of the circuit magistrates. A policeman has a lot to learn about life, and in the BSA Police he was expected to jump in at the deep end from the start. It is also the story of the strange struggle by Rhodesian-born policemen in a force where the majority were English-born, at a time when Rhodesia was in rebellion against Britain. The author's senior officers, though fiercely loyal to the force, were British and required to join the rebellion. It tells of his resentment at the lack of drive by senior officers in the fight against terrorist atrocities. There is additional insight into the Utopian life in Rhodesia, especially in rural areas, when it was still possible to hunt buck for the police mess rations, where there was no electricity or other modern amenities and where the single quarters were in ancient buildings enclosed by a wraparound gauzed-in veranda - a life gone now forever. It is also a story of a young man who grew up in Salisbury, his sexual excesses and sadness. The British Queen Mother was patron of the force all her life and was very proud of her association with it.

The Mean Streets Books are about the service years of the author in the South African Police Force - 1985-1991. The Police Force had almost nothing in common with a Sheriff's Department. The policemen were fighting as light & mechanized infantry besides being policemen. We dealt with violent crime, counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency and full scale riots on a daily base. It is much more than a biography about policing the mean streets - the books explain how an honourable police force became an "instrument of terror." It is a stark warning on what happens when unscrupulous politicians get control of a highly disciplined police force and there is no Bill of Human Rights to stop them from implementing the laws, no matter how unfair it may be. The third book recalls the laughs and the amusing incidents during the Author's time with the South African Police Force. Though not everyone will agree with the policemen's sense of humor, it is fun to read.

This book is an account of forensic consultant Paul O'Sullivan's role in helping nail South Africa's most powerful policeman: Jackie Selebi, former police chief and head of Interpol. Based on thousands of pages of e-mails, statements, affidavits, letters, press reports, court records, and transcripts as well as interviews with O'Sullivan himself, this version provides a perspective from his point of view as a key player in the saga. While O'Sullivan's name consistently appears in almost every key breaking story around the Selebi matter, his role has often been downplayed. The Jackie Selebi story, and the satellite narratives that orbited it, is a truly remarkable chronicle that played itself out in different layers and strata of South African society. The characters that populate it, apart from Jackie Selebi, include the president of the country at the time and his political rival; myriad crooked, corrupt businessmen; a gallery of rotten, very senior rogue cops; a phalanx of undercover intelligence operatives; two-bit hired guns; scrap metal dealers; drug and human traffickers; international criminal syndicates; and a cast of thousands of common petty thugs and criminals. Paul O'Sullivan is no suave James Bond in a tuxedo, equipped with special equipment; when dealing with criminals he can be abrasive, brusque and uncompromising. This is a real account of how the criminal underworld intersects with law enforcement and politics.

Ever since Nelson Mandela dramatically walked out of prison in 1990 after twenty-seven years behind bars, South Africa has been undergoing a radical transformation. In one of the most miraculous events of the century, the oppressive system of apartheid was dismantled. Repressive laws mandating separation of the races were thrown out. The country, which had been carved into a crazy quilt that reserved the most prosperous areas for whites and the most desolate and backward for blacks, was reunited. The dreaded and dangerous security force, which for years had systematically tortured, spied upon, and harassed people of color and their white supporters, was dismantled. But how could this country--one of spectacular beauty and promise--come to terms with its ugly past? How could its people, whom the oppressive white government had pitted against one another, live side by side as friends and neighbors? To begin the healing process, Nelson Mandela created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, headed by the renowned cleric Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Established in 1995, the commission faced the awesome task of hearing the testimony of the victims of apartheid as well as the oppressors. Amnesty was granted to those who offered a full confession of any crimes associated with apartheid. Since the commission began its work, it has been the central player in a drama that has riveted the country. In this book, Antjie Krog, a South African journalist and poet who has covered the work of the commission, recounts the drama, the horrors, the wrenching personal stories of the victims and their families. Through the testimonies of victims of abuse and violence, from the appearance of Winnie Mandela to former South African president P. W. Botha's extraordinary courthouse press conference, this award-winning poet leads us on an amazing journey. Country of My Skull captures the complexity of the Truth Commission's work. The narrative is often traumatic, vivid, and provocative. Krog's powerful prose lures the reader actively and inventively through a mosaic of insights, impressions, and secret themes. This compelling tale is Antjie Krog's profound literary account of the mending of a country that was in colossal need of change.

Schistosomiasis is Africa's second most common parasitic disease. Less than 20 years ago, over 200 million were infected. In many high-risk areas the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) has been helping to tackle the disease by offering treatments to millions of children. This book tells the story of a man, Alan Fenwick, who founded the SCI to control the worms and snails and so improve the lives of many burdened with the disease as well as reducing the numbers infected. Over this period SCI and the Ministries of Health and Education in 16 countries delivered over 220 million treatments. Treatment coverage of up to 75% has been achieved. Widely recognised as a cost-effective and successful intervention, SCI's knock-on effects include improving overall physical health, school attendance and future prospects for millions of people.
