A "rest of the story" account of the famous HMS "Bounty" mutineers who parted ways with Captain Bligh and company, "The Lonely Island" follows the mutineers to a remote, uninhabited island where they hope to finish their days in peace and quiet. For more than twenty years they remained undiscovered on Pitcairn's Island, far off the beaten sailing routes of ships at sea. "The Lonely Island," accordingly to Ballantyne, .,."is essentially a 'true story, ' the merest spider-web of fiction having been employed to bind it together." Readers of this tale discover how men without a reliance and faith in Jesus Christ, left to their own devices, will not experience peace and success. But, when God chooses to work in men's hearts, the change is remarkable.

"Rebecca Rupp's magical tale . . . radiates a glow as golden as the dragon's scales." – Boston Globe Hannah, Zachary, and Sarah Emily are spending the summer at their great-aunt Mehitabel's house on faraway Lonely Island. There, in a cave hidden high above the ocean, they discover a fabulous creature: a glittering three-headed golden dragon with a kind heart, an unpredictable temper, and a memory that spans 20,000 years. Transported by the magic of the dragon's stories, the children meet Mei-lan, a young girl in ancient China; nineteenth-century cabin boy Jamie Pritchett; and, in more recent times, Hitty and her brother, Will, who survive a frightening plane crash on a desert island. In this fluidly written novel, Rebecca Rupp explores what three children from the present learn from the past - and from an unlikely but wise and generous friend.

BY FAR THE BEST NOVEL I HAVE READ IN 2013 - (one of the reviews, dated 19 Dec 2013) A boy is miraculously rescued from a lonely island. Upon investigation it is found that he is the lone survivor of an air crash that happened thirteen years ago. Unbelievably, the boy is only thirteen years old… he was born at the time of air crash! Two people manage to escape from the aircraft, a soon-to-die cancer patient who is going for medical treatment, and a pregnant lady. The lady gives birth to a baby, and dies in childbirth, due to hardships. Helpless on a lonely island, and being aware of his inevitable death soon, the man develops an ingenious idea to teach the child about the mainland and how to reach it. What is the ‘master plan’ that teaches the infant about the mainland at the age of thirteen? How does he come to know about it and escape from there? How did he manage to live alone for so long in spite of being so young? A story that inspires us to find a way, even out of utter hopelessness and teaches the purpose of life. And a striking message comes along with this captivating adventurous tale, that can change the way you think about life. Read and find the hidden treasures in you; and live towards the ultimate goal of life.

"The fathers, mothers, guardians, uncles, and aunts who wish to find an acceptable present for a healthy-minded boy cannot possibly go wrong if they buy a book with Mr. Ballantyne's name on the title page." -The Academy "Mr. Ballantyne waves the romantic episode of the mutiny of the 'Bounty' into a most effective narrative." -Graphic "'The Lonely Island' is a theme quite in accordance with the bent of Mr. Ballantyne's mind, and we almost wonder that it has not occupied an earlier place in the many delightful volumes that he has written for young people. 'The Mutiny of the Bounty' and the subsequent career of the mutineers upon Pitcairn and Norfolk Islands form one of the most remarkable stories of our time, as well as one of the most striking illustrations of what our holy religion can do to elevate our race. This story Mr. Ballantyne here tells in his wonted attractive manner, and brings it down to last year....It is one that the reader, if he once begins, will be loft to leave until he finishes it." -The Christian Treasury "The true story of the Mutiny of the Bounty seems never likely to grow stale; and even at this time of day, so long after the event, Mr. Ballantyne's fresh account of it, under the thin disguise of fiction, it promises to be more interesting than ever, particularly to young readers. The chief actors in the drama are vividly represented, and the settlement on the lonely Pitcairn Island in the Pacific is described with the minute realism of Defoe." -The Bookseller "Mr. Ballantyne, as has been hinted, traverses many paths which are in some sort familiar to Mr. Kingston's readers. But he does more. He accomplishes for science and natural history what neither Jules Verne nor Mayne Reid succeeded in doing. His style is so racy, his knack of silvering the pill so happy, that he plunges a boy into the depths of abstruse questions without giving the victim time to consider whether he cares for the dose or not." -The Library Magazine "Few writers in any age have so well deserved the gratitude and affection of the young as the genial author of 'The Lonely Island' and so many other popular tales. For forty years he has labored unweariedly for their entertainment, and his success has been conspicuous. He has, we believe, been the most prolific writer of his time, the number of his books being close to eighty....What is more, every one of his books is inspired by a lofty idea. Many intelligent people will not be ashamed to confess that they got their first real taste for reading from the works of Mr. Ballantyne. He was something more than a mere storyteller, a weaver of charming romance. An exceedingly cunning schoolmaster, he instructed while pretending to amuse....It is safe to say his books will be relished by lads for many generations to come." -The Publisher
