This is a world seen through animist eyes: as friendly to human life as it was to the life of gazelles, lions, lizards, mosquitos, jellyfish, and seals - not a world in which humans lived like tresp assers who must conquer and subdue an alien territory. It's a world in which humans have a place in the community of life - not as rulers but as equa ls. This is not an ancient world or a lost world. It exists as surely today as it ever did - for those who have eyes to see it.

Ever since the publication of Ishmael in 1992, readers have yearned for a glimpse into a dimension of spiritual revelation the author only hinted at in that and later books. Now at long last they have it in seven profound but delightfully simple tales that illuminate the world in which humans became humans. This is a world seen through animist eyes: as friendly to human life as it was to the life of gazelles, lions, lizards, mosquitos, jellyfish, and seals — not a world in which humans lived like trespassers who must conquer and subdue an alien territory. It's a world in which humans have a place in the community of life — not as rulers but as equals — with the paths of all held together in the hand of god. This is not an ancient world or a lost world. It exists as surely today as it ever did — for those who have eyes to see it. Tales of Adam, delightfully illustrated by Michael McCurdy, is a book that will come to be shelved alongside The Prophet, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, and The Alchemist.

Reader: beware. Warlocks with dark spells, hunters with deadly aim, and bakers with ovens retrofitted for cooking children lurk within these pages. But if you dare, turn the page and learn the true story of Hansel and Gretel - the story behind (and beyond) the bread crumbs, edible houses and outwitted witches. Come on in. It may be frightening, it's certainly bloody, and it's definitely not for the faint of heart. 'Gidwitz manages to balance the grisly violence of the original Grimms' fairy tales with a wonderful sense of humor and narrative voice. Check it out!' Rick Riordan 'Unlike any children's book I've ever read. [It] holds up to multiple readings, like the classic I think it will turn out to be' New York Times 'An audacious debut that's wicked smart and wicked funny' Publisher's Weekly, starred review 'Addictively compelling' School Library Journal, starred review

When God created Adam, He did so because mankind had reached a point in its evolution where a messiah was needed to help them reach a higher level of consciousness. After sculpting Adam out of mud, the Big Guy then placed him in Eden and, just to keep him busy, commanded him to name the animals. After that, God more or less abandoned Adam and didn't tell him much of anything else, creating a climate of tension and mistrust between the two that eventually led to Adam getting kicked out of the Garden without knowing what his purpose in life was. Mankind was screwed. At least, that's the way Adam tells it anyway. Lying on his deathbed, Adam decides that the time has come to clear up some of those vicious rumors floating around about how he and Eve were responsible for all the bad things that had happened to mankind since the two were expelled from the Garden. Join Adam as he fills in the gaps of the Genesis story. It's an hilarious adventure filled with bad behavior, fallen angels, rampaging giants, neglectful fathers, rebellious sons, corporate greed, anarchy, violence and just enough sex to be deliciously sinful.

Excerpt from Adam Eve Pinch Me, Tales In the Great Days that are gone I was walking the Journey upon its easy smiling roads and came one morning of windy spring to the side of a wood. I had but just rested to eat my crusts and suck a drink from the pool when a fat woman appeared and sat down before me. I gave her the grace of the morning. "And how many miles is it now?" I asked of her. "What!" said she, "you're not going the journey?" "Sure, ma'am," said I, "I'm going, and you're going, and we're all going. aren't we?" "Not," said she, looking at me very archly, "not while there are well-looking young fellers sitting in the woods." "Well, deliver me!" said I, "d'ye take me for the Angel Gabriel or the duke of the world!" "It's not anything I'm taking you to be, young mam. give me a chew of that bread." She came and sat beside me and took it from my hands. "Little woman." I began it to her; but at that she flung the crust back in my face, laughing and choking and screaming, "Me. that's fat as a ewe in January!" "Fat, woman!" says I, "you're no fat at all." But, I declare it, she'd a bosom like a bolster. I lay on my back beside her. She was a rag of a woman. I looked up through the tree branches at the end of the shaw; they were bare, spring was late that year. The sky was that blue., there wasn't a cloud within a million miles. but up through the boughs it looked hard and steely like a storm sky. I took my hat from her, for she had put it on her own head, and I stood on my feet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
