The present selection traces the development of Yeats' fully annotated verse, encompassing the poet's interest in Irish folklore and national identity, his engagement with the political situation of his day and the rich symbolism that is the hallmark of his work and a reflection of his lifelong fascination with the occult. It contains some of his best-known pieces, including the elegiac 'Easter 1916', the apocalyptic "e;The Second Coming"e; and the reflective and spiritual "e;Sailing to Byzantium"e;. Often radical in content but always traditional in form, these poems are by turns startling and affecting, and never less than inspired. Taken together, they form an ideal introduction to the poetic career of one of Ireland's greatest literary figures. This edition contains a wealth of material about the author's life and works, extensive notes and a bibliographic section.

Ten years after the supposed death of Sherlock Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls, Arthur Conan Doyle was to bow to popular pressure and breathe new life into his creation. To the astonishment of Dr Watson, and the delight of his readers, Holmes reappears in Baker Street to embark on a new series of adventures. Amongst the famous cases he and Watson tackle are `The Dancing Men', `The Solitary Cyclist', and `The Six Napoleons'. Conan Doyle's own life provides inspiration for the tales, from his days as a student doctor on a Greenland whaler to the overwhelming grief he experienced from his wife's slow death from tuberculosis. - ;Ten years after the supposed death of Sherlock Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls, Arthur Conan Doyle was to bow to popular pressure and breathe new life into his creation. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is the series of short stories that made the fortunes of the Strand magazine, in which they were first published, and won immense popularity for Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. The detective is at the height of his powers and the volume is full of famous cases, including `The Red-Headed League', `The Blue Carbuncle', and `The Speckled Band'. Although Holmes gained a reputation for infallibility, Conan Doyle showed his own realism and feminism by having the great detective defeated by Irene Adler - the woman - in the very first story, `A Scandal in Bohemia'. The editor of this volume, Richard Lancelyn Green is editor of The Uncollected Sherlock Holmes and The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. With John Michael Gibson, he compiled the Soho Series Bibliography of A. Conan Doyle. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The very first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet was also the first of Conan Doyle's books to be published. His two creations, Holmes, the master of the science of detection and Watson, the great detective's faithful companion, are immediately in fine form. The mystery itself, its solution plucked unerringly by Holmes from the heart of Victorian London, proves to be the inevitable consequence of a tragedy of the American West. The story is harrowing in its alternating hope and despair, although Holmes himself was later to complain that the book `produces much the same effect as if you worked a love-story or an elopement into the fifth proposition of Euclid'. - ;The very first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet was also the first of Conan Doyle's books to be published. Round the Red Lamp. Being Facts and Fancies of Medical Life (Arthur Conan Doyle) Round the Red Lamp. Being Facts and Fancies of Medical Life is a volume collecting 15 short stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle. These are medical and fantasy stories. The idea has been suggested to Conan Doyle by Jerome K. Jerome two years before when he was editor of The Idler. The red lamp was the usual sign of the general practitioner in England wrote Conan Doyle in the preface.Preface[Being an extract from a long and animated correspondence with a friend in America.]I quite recognise the force of your objection that an invalid or a woman in weak health would get no good from stories which attempt to treat some features of medical life with a certain amount of realism. If you deal with this life at all, however, and if you are anxious to make your doctors something more than marionettes, it is quite essential that you should paint the darker side, since it is that which is principally presented to the surgeon or physician. He sees many beautiful things, it is true, fortitude and heroism, love and self-sacrifice but they are all called forth (as our nobler qualities are always called forth) by bitter sorrow and trial. One cannot write of medical life and be merry over it.Then why write of it, you may ask? If a subject is painful why treat it at all? I answer that it is the province of fiction to treat painful things as well as cheerful ones. The story which wiles away a weary hour fulfils an obviously good purpose, but not more so, I hold, than that which helps to emphasise the graver side of life. A tale which may startle the reader out of his usual grooves of thought, and shocks him into seriousness, plays the part of the alterative and tonic in medicine, bitter to the taste but bracing in the result. There are a few stories in this little collection which might have such an effect, and I have so far shared in your feeling that I have reserved them from serial publication. In book-form the reader can see that they are medical stories, and can, if he or she be so minded, avoid them. - Yours very truly, A. CONAN DOYLE.P.S. - You ask about the Red Lamp. It is the usual sign of the general practitioner in England.
