Early Orientalism written by Ivan Kalmar and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-17 with History categories.

The history of western notions about Islam is of obvious scholarly as well as popular interest today. This book investigates Christian images of the Muslim Middle East, focusing on the period from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, when the nature of divine as well as human power was under particularly intense debate in the West. Ivan Kalmar explores how the controversial notion of submission to ultimate authority has in the western world been discussed with reference to Islam’s alleged recommendation to obey, unquestioningly, a merciless Allah in heaven and a despotic government on earth. He discusses how Abrahamic faiths – Christianity and Judaism as much as Islam – demand devotion to a sublime power, with the faith that this power loves and cares for us, a concept that brings with it the fear that, on the contrary, this power only toys with us for its own enjoyment. For such a power, Kalmar borrows Slavoj Zizek’s term "obscene father". He discusses how this describes exactly the western image of the Oriental despot - Allah in heaven, and the various sultans, emirs and ayatollahs on earth – and how these despotic personalities of imagined Muslim society function as a projection, from the West on to the Muslim Orient, of an existential anxiety about sublime power. Making accessible academic debates on the history of Christian perceptions of Islam and on Islam and the West, this book is an important addition to the existing literature in the areas of Islamic studies, religious history and philosophy.

The Remembered Present written by Andrzej Jackowski and has been published by Black Dog Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Art categories.

Born to Polish parents, the first 11 years of Andrzej Jackowski's life were spent in a post-war refugee camp, and The Remembered Present delves into the resulting themes of alienation, family, childhood and nationality that are ever-present in the artist's work. As one of the leading figurative painters of his generation, the work of Andrzej Jackowski is mostly biographical, based on his early childhood memories, recollections of a family history in Poland and the feelings of alienation and enclosure that these experiences roused. Using powerful, insistent images from his past Jackowski explores ideas of human memory and psyche both on a personal and more collective level. As such, his paintings and drawings have come to be imbued with some of the defining imagery of modern European history, reflecting a generations feeling towards concentration camps, war and the displacement of populations. The Remembered Present is the first profile on his hugely intriguing artist and includes essays by Gabriel Josopovici, Timothy Hyman and Professor Michael Tucker. Images of dispossession, loss and identity are continually addressed, bringing ideas such as invasion, betrayal, childhood and nationality to the forefront of current debates concerning painting. Whether personal or private in intention, his work is an embodiment of contemporary historical painting. AUTHOR: Timothy Hyman is an English painter and writer, and is a frequent contributor to The Times Literary Supplement, London Magazine, Artscribe and Modern Painter Gabriel David Josipovici is a British novelist, short story writer, critic, literary theorist, and playwright. Besides short fiction and 14 novels he has published a substantial body of literary criticism, over a dozen plays and radio plays. He also serves as a regular reviewer for The Times Literary Supplement. Professor Michael Tucker has curated extensively and published widely in the fields of visual art, music and poetry. In 1998 he was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Letetrs by the University of Sussex for "distinguished contributions to the advancement of learning". SELLING POINTS: As one of the leading figurative painters of his generation, the work of Andrzej Jackowski is largely biographical, based on early childhood memories in a post-war refuge camp, recollections of a family history in Poland and the feelings of alienation and enclosure that these experiences roused. The subject matter draws on his childhood memories and the inherited memories of his family's background conveyed to him through his father's storytelling and the family's photographic albums. The Remembered Present is the first book given over to the entirety of Jackowski's work, which includes drawings, prints and paintings and extends back to works that he undertook as a student through to his most recent work. Dennis—with a famous painter father and social activist mother—is a small-time drug dealer and total mess. His hero-worshipping friend Warren has just impulsively stolen $15,000 from his father, an abusive lingerie tycoon. When Jessica, a mixed-up prep school girl, shows up for a date, Warren pulls out a wad of bills and takes her off, awkwardly, for a night of seduction. A wildly funny, bittersweet, and moving story, This Is Our Youth is as trenchant as it was upon its acclaimed premiere in 1996.
