Excerpt from Tales of Two Countries A Blue lake is deeply set in mountains capped with eternal snow. A dark network of gardens descends in gorgeous folds to the water. White houses that look like lumps of sugar peer down from the bank into the lake; and everything around is as quiet and peaceful as the sleep of a child. It is morning. A perfume of flowers is wafted gently from the mountains. The sun is new risen and the dew still glistens on the leaves of trees and the petals of flowers. A road like a grey ribbon thrusts into the quiet mountain gorge - a stone-paved road which yet looks as soft as velvet, so that one almost has a desire to stroke it. Near a pile of stones sits a workman, like some dark coloured beetle; on his breast is a medal; his face is serious, bold, but kindly. This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Excerpt from Works of Charles Dickens, Vol. 1: Household Edition It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way, - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest anthorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. There were a king with a large jaw and a queen with a plain face, on the throne, of England; there were a king with a large jaw and a queen with a fair face on the throne of France. In both countries it was clearer than crystal to the lords of the State preserves of loaves and nshes, that things in general were settled forever. Tales About America and Australia by Samuel G. Goodrich is a fascinating account of history, geography and culture of two countries on either side of the globe. Goodrich uses the name Peter Parley to narrate these tales, making them an instant hit for children and young adults looking for a gripping account of voyages, discoveries and beautiful descriptions of Australia and America. Goodrich takes the reader through the exciting journeys of Christopher Columbus and Pizarro among other well-known voyagers. Tales About America and Australia is spread across multiple chapters with a substantial chunk on Columbus' voyages and encounters in the New World. Goodrich is able to deconstruct rather complex historical accounts into simple narratives that retain the essence of that era while keeping the language simple and easy to understand. Goodrich keeps the reader enticed with an intelligent selection of tales that bring out the anxiety, nervous energy and uncertainty of discovering new places and people. The book is full of illustrations that help contextualizing particular incidents and events described in the narrative. Even though a lesser portion of the book deals with Australia, it is this particular section which contains within it some great trivia and detailed analysis of native inhabitants, flora, fauna and culture of the newly discovered country. While Tales About America and Australia is an excellent piece of work for young adults to appreciate the discovery of new lands, it is by no means a book meant for children alone. It has within it, hidden treasures of information which can be immensely entertaining not just for the young but adult readers as well.
