Through insiders’ perspectives and narratives, this edited collection provides insight into the lived experiences of recent graduates of various English Applied Linguistics and/or TESOL doctoral programs in North America. The authors document how their personal and professional identities intersected during their doctoral studies and how these doctoral programs, as learning environments, supported them in their professional development and dissertation research. As such, their insider perspectives and narratives are of special value to those contemplating pursuing such a program, or are in progress towards their own degree, as well as the faculty members who advise and support these doctoral students. Chapters focus on topics immediately relevant to success and persistence in a doctoral program, such as developing a network of mentors, establishing a work-life balance, and professional socialization, among others. All authors are recent graduates of their programs who have been intentionally selected for their recent memories in navigating the process. At a time when doctoral program persistence declines at the intersection of students’ gender and racial background (see Okahana & Zhou, 2019) there is a pressing need to share the insights and lived experiences of those less commonly featured in narratives of the successful doctoral scholar. This need is especially true among TESOL professionals who will teach and learn in diverse, global settings throughout their careers following their graduation. This book contributes to that need, and it is an essential resource for scholars in TESOL/English Applied Linguistics and other similar doctoral programs.

The Identity Of The Professional Interpreter written by Alan James Runcieman and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-27 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This monograph examines how higher education(HE) institutions construct ‘professional identities’ in the classroom, specifically how dominant discourses in institutions frame the social role, requisite skills and character required to practice a profession, and how students navigate these along their academic trajectories. This book is based on a longitudinal case study of a prestigious HE institution specialising in training professional interpreters. Adopting an innovative research approach, it investigates a community of aspiring professionals in a HE context by drawing on small story narrative analysis from an ethnographic perspective to provide emic insights into the student community and the development of their social identities. The findings (contextualised by examining the curricula of similar institutions worldwide) suggest that interpreter institutions might not be providing students with a clear and comprehensive picture of the interpreter profession, and not responding to its increasingly complex role in today’s society.

Everyday Multilingualism written by Anikó Hatoss and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-16 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
Hatoss explores multilingualism in diverse suburbs of Sydney through the oral and written narratives of student ethnographers. Her research is based on visual ethnography, interviews with local residents, and classroom discussions of the fieldwork. The findings of this book contribute to the scholarship of sociolinguistics of globalisation and seek to enhance our understanding of the complex interrelationship between the linguistic landscape and its participants: how language choices are negotiated, how identity and ideologies shape interactions in everyday contexts of the urban landscape. The narrative approach provides a multi-layered analysis to better understand the micro and macro connections shaping everyday interactions, conviviality, and social relations. Hatoss offers methodological and pedagogical insights into the development of global citizenship and intercultural competence through the experiential learning provided by the linguistic landscape project. This volume is a useful source for researchers working in diverse fields of multilingualism, diaspora studies, narratives, and digital ethnographies in sociolinguistics. It offers methodological insights into the study of urban multilingualism and pedagogical insights into using linguistic landscapes for developing intercultural competence.
