The NDP was close to collapse after its disastrous showing in the 1993 federal election. How did a party that once had significant support among voters fall so badly? What are the prospects for the NDP's return as a major presence in federal politics? Journalist Ian McLeod approaches these questions as a party insider who believes that the NDP continues to have a constructive role to play in Canadian politics. His story of the party's decline has been pieced together from interviews with a wide range of key advisors, strategists, former MPs and party members. First published in 1994, Under Siege is an in-depth account of a significant passage in the history of democratic socialism in Canada.

An innovative exploration of ways of thinking and doing politics that challenge liberal assumptions.'Politics on the edges of liberalism' refers to a grey zone where phenomena such as difference, populism, revolution and agitation turn the distinction between the inside and the outside of liberalism into a matter of dispute. Each chapter takes on one of these ideas, discussing the intellectual background animating the politics of the culture wars and its celebration of particularism over the universalism of classical liberal thought. Populism becomes a spectral recurrence rather than an outside of democracy. Agitation reappaers in emancipatory politics, and the idea of revolution is thought through outside the Jacobin view of insurrection, overthrow and total re-foundation.This is truly interdisciplinary inquiry at the cutting edge of contemporary debates in politics, critical theory, philosophy and sociology. The author draws from an impressive range of thinkers such as Kant, Benjamin, Derrida, Freu

Talking About A Revolution written by Yassmin Abdel-Magied and has been published by Random House Australia this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-31 with Australian essays categories.

Yassmin Abdel-Magied brings her characteristic warmth, clarity and inquisitive nature to the concept of 'the private and public self' and 'systems and society' that form the two halves of this collection. In 'The Private and Public Self', Yassmin explores resistance and revolution from the perspective of the individual. She provides a hearty defence of hobbies, explores what it means to be Black across contexts, and shares the personal challenges around her activism and leaving Australia. Between meditiations on friendship and laments on petrol cars, Yassmin interrogates what it means to organise for social justice as a Muslim, and when you aren't sure where you belong. In 'Systems and Society', through discussion on the meaning of citizenship, cryptocurrency and unconscious bias, Yassmin charts how her thinking on activism, transformative change and justice has evolved. She brings an abolitionist lens to social justice work and, recalling her days as a young revolutionary, encourages younger generations of activists to decide if it is empowerment they are working towards, or power. In all these essays, written with the passion, lived experience and intelligence of someone who wants to improve our world, the concept of revolution, however big or small, is ever-present.

This book examines how cultural and ideological reactions to activism in the post-Civil Rights Black community were depicted in fiction written by Black women writers, 1965–1980. By recognizing and often challenging prevailing cultural paradigms within the post-Civil Rights era, writers such as Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Toni Cade Bambara, and Paule Marshall fictionalized the black community in critical ways that called for further examination of progressive activism after the much publicized 'end' of the Civil Rights Movement. Through their writings, the authors’ confronted marked shifts within African American literature, politics and culture that proved detrimental to the collective 'wellness' of the community at large.

After The Crisis Remembrance Re Anchoring And Recovery In Ancient Greece And Rome written by Jacqueline Klooster and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-06 with History categories.

Crises resulting from war or other upheavals turn the lives of individuals upside down, and they can leave marks on a community for many years after the event. This volume aims to explore how such crises were remembered in the ancient world, and how communities reconstituted themselves after a crisis. Can crises serve as catalysts for innovation or change, and how does this work? What do crises reveal about the 'normality' against which they are defined and framed? People living in post-crisis societies have no choice but to adapt to the changes caused by crisis. Such adaptation entails the question of how the relationship between the pre-crisis situation and the new status quo is constructed, and by whom. Due to the reduced possibility of using the immediate past, which is tainted by conflict and bad memories, it may involve revisions of historical narratives about communal pasts and identities, through the selection of new 'anchors', and sometimes even a discarding of the old ones. Crises affect all areas of life, and crisis recovery likewise spans different spheres. This volume finds traces of such recovery strategies in texts as well as visual representations; in literary as well as in documentary texts; in official ideology as much as in subaltern responses. The contributors bring together the diverse testimonies for such ways of coping that have survived from antiquity.

Overdue written by Amity Reed and has been published by Pinter & Martin Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-01 with Health & Fitness categories.

Amity Reed became a midwife to serve women, but the reality of working in over-stretched and underfunded NHS maternity services soon shattered her illusions. She's not alone - for every 30 midwives that train, 29 will leave the profession. Overdue is both the devastating personal story behind the statistics, and a call for change in the NHS. Real-life stories capture the moments at the heart of midwifery: life, death, birth, tragedy and joy, and are embedded in a clear-sighted examination of what is working and what isn't in maternity services. The result is a book that asks - and tries to answer - questions that are at the heart of many people's working lives: how can we follow our calling, provide for our families and keep ourselves healthy, if the workplace and its systems are working against us?
