Tales of the Wild, Wild West: The Lady and the Gent -- Sheriff Billings, now on the water wagon, has his hands full as Stud, a friend from his old life style, rides into town. Seems trouble always follows Stud, and the new Sheriff Billings will have to deal with those problems. Miss Sally is not sure if she is glad to see Stud. It has been about eight years since he left town and broke her heart as he said, "I've business to take care of." Now he is back and she is confused as to her true feelings for this whiskey guzzling gambler and man about town. Perhaps the Reverend Robert (Brother Rob) McKinley can help out. He tells Stud that he has never delivered babies, but does know how to pray. He's rather adept at handling a Colt .45 as well. Then there is that mysterious woman in black who affectionately addresses the bachelor preacher as, "Robbie Dear," and tells him, "The children miss you." Despite his struggles, can Brother Rob, with the Lord's help, tame this wild town? Only time will tell.

Catherine Evans fell in love when she was three years old, head-over-heels, forever kind of love. The very first moment she saw twelve-year-old Duncan McKenzie, she told God and her pony that she was going to marry that boy. He was handsome. He was kind. He was strong and smart and all the good things a boy should be. For thirteen years she loved him with every beat of her heart. And on her sixteenth birthday he walked away from her father's ranch, and from her. He didn't look back over his shoulder. Not even once. And from that day forward, Catherine Evans swore off all men. Her heart turned to stone, her will to iron, and her vow to God changed. She'd run her father's ranch. She'd succeed. She'd survive. And she would never, ever love another man as long as she lived. Duncan McKenzie left the ranch ten years ago, desperate to escape temptation in the form of a budding young lady too innocent to claim for his own. But Catherine's frightened father summons him home. The ranch is under attack and the old man's stubborn daughter refuses to seek help. Duncan left a sweet young girl behind a decade ago. He returns to a defiant siren, a woman whose heart is as wild as the land she would sacrifice her life to protect. When Catherine's father coerces her into marrying Duncan, the fire in her eyes spells trouble, but it's the kind of trouble Duncan has no desire to resist. Marriage is the only way he can protect her. Especially when Duncan's own past comes calling in the form of one extremely dangerous and vengeful outlaw, Catherine's cowardly enemies want the ranch badly enough to kill for it, and his reluctant bride is very much in their way.

A buttoned-up businessman and a gorgeous wild-child . . . what happens when opposites definitely attract? By day, Aaron Clarkson suits up, shakes hands, and acts the perfect gentleman. And at night, behind bedroom doors, the tie comes off and the real Aaron comes out to play. But he knows that if he wants to work for the country’s most powerful senator, he’ll have to keep his eye on the prize. That’s easier said than done, though, when he meets the senator’s daughter. She’s wild, gorgeous, and 100 percent trouble. Grace Pendleton is the black sheep of her family. Yet while Aaron's presence reminds her of a past she’d rather forget, something in his eyes keeps drawing her in. Maybe it’s the way his voice turns her molten. A dramatic new interpretation of the encounter between Europe and the Americas that reveals the crucial role of animals in the shaping of the modern world. When the men and women of the island of Guanahani first made contact with Christopher Columbus and his crew on October 12, 1492, the cultural differences between the two groups were vaster than the oceans that had separated them. There is perhaps no better demonstration than the divide in their respective ways of relating to animals. In The Tame and the Wild, Marcy Norton tells a new history of the colonization of the Americas, one that places wildlife and livestock at the center of the story. She reveals that the encounters between European and Native American beliefs about animal life transformed societies on both sides of the Atlantic. Europeans’ strategies and motives for conquest were inseparable from the horses that carried them in military campaigns and the dogs they deployed to terrorize Native peoples. Even more crucial were the sheep, cattle, pigs, and chickens whose flesh became food and whose skins became valuable commodities. Yet as central as the domestication of animals was to European plans in the Americas, Native peoples’ own practices around animals proved just as crucial in shaping the world after 1492. Cultures throughout the Caribbean, Amazonia, and Mexico were deeply invested in familiarization: the practice of capturing wild animals—not only parrots and monkeys but even tapir, deer, and manatee—and turning some of them into “companion species.” These taming practices not only influenced the way Indigenous people responded to human and nonhuman intruders but also transformed European culture itself, paving the way for both zoological science and the modern pet.

One Eye on the World takes readers on a serious yet humorous journey of the glory years of the newspaper industry. This was before the sad state of many faltering newspapers and the biased media in today’s world. The book’s title comes from the author, John L. Shields, losing one eye at one and a half years old. Having only one eye impacted John’s life, but he turned it into a positive and was known for his unusual sense of humor. Throughout a career in several states—West Coast, East Coast, and in between—his path crossed with well-known entertainers, politicians, and news makers. Readers will find an interesting recounting of history, from John’s birth in 1942 through the present. The author had a front row seat to some of the most dramatic changes in US history—events that changed the world. Readers will ride along with someone who spent almost fifty years in newspapers as a newspaper carrier, circulation mail-room employee, reporter, sports editor, editor, supervisor for groups of newspapers, and CEO/publisher. Those years—from 1959 to 2007—were some of the most turbulent, and brought some of the most dramatic changes for the country, both good and bad. John’s stories give readers insight into a reporter-editor-photographer covering schools, tragedies, corruption, and human interest. These stories bring readers into the newsroom of daily newspapers, and how decisions are made.
