'A masterclass of contemporary Tamil poetry' - Namita Gokhale In 2003, a group of men and women, setting themselves up as guardians of Tamil culture, objected publicly to the language of a new generation of women poets - particularly in the work of Malathi Maithri, Salma, Kutti Revathi and Sukirtharani - charging the women with obscenity and immodesty. More than a decade later, a deep divide still persists in the way readers and critics perceive women poets. Tamil women poets have been categorized as 'bad girls' and 'good girls'. The traditional values prescribed for the 'good' Tamil woman are fearfulness, propriety and modesty. Our poets have chosen, instead, the opposite virtues - fearlessness, outspokenness and a ceaseless questioning of prescribed rules. This anthology celebrates the poetry of the four poets through Lakshmi Holmstrom's English translation.

The Rapids of a Great River begins with selections from the earliest known Tamil poetry dating from the second century CE. The writings of the Sangam period laid the foundation for the Tamil poetic tradition, and they continue to underlie and inform the works of Tamil poets even today. The first part of this anthology traverses the Sangam and bhakti periods and closes with pre-modern poems from the nineteenth century. The second part, a compilation of modern and contemporary poetry, opens with the work of the revolutionary poet Subramania Bharati. Breaking free from prescriptions, the new voices—which include Sri Lankan Tamils, women and dalits, among others—address the contemporary reader; the poems, underscored by a sharp rhetorical edge, grapple with the complexities of the modern political and social world. The selection is wide-ranging and the translations admirably echo the music, pace and resonance of the poems. This anthology links the old with the new, cementing the continuity of a richly textured tradition. There is something in the collection for every reader and each will make his or her own connections—at times startling, at other times familiar.

The contents of this book fall under two sections. Section-I consists of three exhaustive chapters, one in English and two in Tamil, dealing with all aspects of the Art of Translation and also providing an in-depth analysis of the problems of translating texts from Tamil into English in general and poetry in particular. These chapters form a strong theoretical basis for Section-II. Section-II contains select poems of five representative poets of the modern era, namely Na. Pichamurthy, Sirpi Balasubramaniam, Abdul Rahman, Manushya Puthiran and Tamizhachi Thangapandian, and their corresponding translations in English by me with a view to providing a practice-oriented approach to the process of translating Tamil poetry into English. In addition, each poet is briefly introduced highlighting the salient features of their poetry. In my approach, I have tried to be very close to the original texts literally and idiomatically as far as possible, and so consciously avoided more sophistication in translating them. The immediate purpose of this book is to offer certain practical insights into the various aspects of translation and help teachers and students of literature to grasp with ease the nuances of translation through model exercises. At the same time I fondly hope that this book will kindle the interest of anyone who has a natural bent for translation.

At the threshold of M.A.Shaki's Realm of PoetryOn This Volume - A Few Things to Share...Latha Ramakrishnan. When I joined Facebook one by one many poets from India and Sri Lanka became my friends.Friends means not that we interacted much. But, our poems did.One such poet was M.A.Shaki.When a poet mentions sea it need not be a specific sea or a real sea or not even a sea. A discerning reader understands this. When Poet Shaki says 'this is My Sea' the real and surreal seas, the seas of the bygone eras and those of today, the seas that are and are not are all swelling and surrounding us, within and without and we are caught in its swing and swirl.Reading her poignant poems brought to my mind so instantly the poetic deficiencies of some of the poets who have become universally known as the frontline poets of Tamil. This always happens due to various factors, irrespective of religion and caste. To put it more precisely. Despite being qualitatively good not all poets of the same caste and the same religion get the recognition and reward due for them. This can be called some sort of 'existential crisis'.Being a single parent, taking care of her four children, suffering the onslaught of breast cancer, all the while having Tailoring as her means of livelihood, Poet M.A.Shaki found solace and relief in penning poems. In June this year, i.e. 2019 she breathed her last leaving her poems behind to keep her alive.By way of paying homage to a truly great poet I am presenting this small volume comprising 20 poems of our fellow-poet M.A.Shaki, also known as Thirumalai Shaki, with their English renderings by me.A brief profile of the poet and an article by fellow poet Riyaz Quarana who is known for his poems that are rich in style and content are also there, both in Tamil and English.I feel honoured to bring forth this volume under the banner of ANAAMIKAA ALPHABETS.I thank all my facebook friends and fellow poets, Poet Nasbullah, Ryaz Quarana and Poet Shaki's eldest daughter Amyfor encouraging and supporting this initiative of mine.Latha RamakrishnanANAAMIKAA ALPHABETS10.07.2019The bird's slice of skygets stuck inside the cage.M.A.SHAKIPOET M.A.SHAKI, A REPUTED TAMIL POET hailing from SRI Lanka. She is well known and much respected for her poems that she used to upload in her Facebook Timeline. Mohammed Abusali and Bathila Umma are her parents. Her poem collection NIRANGAL UDHIRKKUM IRAVU(Hues Dropping Night) was published in 2017 and was well received and widely acclaimed. Being a single parent she looked after her four children with care and concern, toiling hard to bring them up, educating them and being their friend, philosopher and guide, using her skill and expertise in Tailoring as her means of livelihood. Despite fighting against the onslaught of breast cancer for the past several years and all the time working to feed her children and educate them, Shaki never stopped writing poetry - soulful and poignant - finding joy and relief in reading and writing Poetry. Her poems are highly poetic, to say the least. She breathed her last this June(June 2019) and by way of paying respect to our fellow poet and expressing solidarity, this small volume comprising some 20 poems of Shaki with their English renderings is published. So long Shaki. Your poems will live on!
