In Malaysia race is viewed not as an external attribute attached to a person but rather as an innate characteristic. Starting from this foundation, race and indigeneity have featured prominently in Malaysian politics throughout the post-war era, influencing both the civil status and property rights of broad sectors of the population. Scientific opinion shapes Malaysian thinking about the subject as do stereotypes, but much of the discussion rests on concepts developed within the discipline of anthropology and by the colonial administration in a process that dates back to the early nineteenth century. Taming the Wild examines the complex history of indigeneity and racial thought in the Malay Peninsula, and the role played by the politics of knowledge in determining racial affinities, by charting the progression of thought concerning indigenous or aboriginal people. The author shows that the classifications of indigenous and Malay depend on a mixture of cultural, social and religious knowledge that is compressed under the heading race but differs according to the circumstances under which it is produced and the uses to which it is put. By historicizing the categorization of aborigines and British engagement with aboriginal groups in Malaya, Taming the Wild situates racial knowledge within larger frames of anthropological and racial thought, and highlights the persistence of nineteenth-century understandings of indigeneity and Malayness in racial contestations in modern Malaysia.

Design, Specification and Verification of Interactive Systems 2008 was the 15th of a series of annual workshops devoted to helping designers and implementers of interactive systems unleash the power of modern interaction devices and techniques. DSV-IS 2008 was held at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, during July 16–18, 2008. This book collects the best papers submitted to the workshop. There were 17 full papers, 10 late-breaking and experience report papers, and two demonstrations. Keynote presentations were provided by Judy Brown of Carleton University and Randy Ellis of Queen’s University. The first day of the workshop addressed the problems of user interface evaluation and specification, with particular emphasis on the use of task models to provide hi- level approaches for capturing the intended functionality of a user interface. Day two continued this theme, examining techniques for modeling user interfaces, particularly for mobile and ubiquitous applications. Presenters also discussed advanced implem- tation techniques for interactive systems. Finally, day three considered how to arc- tect interactive systems, and returned to the themes of evaluation and specification.

The Automated Technology for Veri?cation and Analysis (ATVA) international symposium series was initiated in 2003, responding to a growing interest in formal veri?cation spurred by the booming IT industry, particularly hardware design and manufacturing in East Asia. Its purpose is to promote research on automated veri?cation and analysis in the region by providing a forum for int- action between the regional and the international research/industrial commu- ties of the ?eld. ATVA 2005, the third of the ATVA series, was held in Taipei, Taiwan, October 4–7, 2005. The main theme of the symposium encompasses - sign, complexities, tools, and applications of automated methods for veri?cation and analysis. The symposium was co-located and had a two-day overlap with FORTE 2005, which was held October 2–5, 2005. We received a total of 95 submissions from 17 countries. Each submission was assigned to three Program Committee members, who were helped by their subreviewers, for rigorous and fair evaluation. The ?nal deliberation by the P- gram Committee was conducted over email for a duration of about 10 days after nearly all review reports had been collected. In the end, 33 papers were - lectedforinclusionintheprogram.ATVA2005hadthreekeynotespeechesgiven respectively by Amir Pnueli (joint with FORTE 2005), Zohar Manna, and Wo- gang Thomas. The main symposium was preceded by a tutorial day, consisting of three two-hour lectures given also by the keynote speakers.
