Tang Soo Do Chung Do Kwan describes the creation, history and evolution of the first Korean Kwan by the founder Grandmaster, Won Kuk Lee who was the first Korean martial arts Master to use Tang Soo Do to describe the Japanese style of Korean Karate he taught. It was Korea's first Post World War II martial art that would get Grandmaster Won Kuk Lee arrested, imprisoned and put on trial as a Japanese sympathizer because he was allowed to teach Tang Soo Do with the Japanese still incontrol of Korea and his Tang Soo Do was so successful and a threat to the new Korean independent government that his reputation had to be tarnished. The author describes Chung Do Kwan's travels through the new post world War II Korean government's desire to close the Chung Do Kwan Tang Soo Do and the forces that wanted it changed to become Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do. The auther includes Grandmaster Won Kuk Lee's relationship with the Japanese occupying forces in Korea that allowed him to teach Tang Soo Do just before the Japanese were forced to leave Korea by the U.S. Military and the U.S. military General that invited Grandmaster Won Kuk Lee to immigrate to the United States and avoid his enemies in the new, young independent Korean government that was searching to destroy anyone they could call a Japanese sympathizer. The author describes the entire evolution of the Chung Do Kwan Tang Soo Do as a political entity and its contribution to the development of Chung Do Kwan's Tae Kwon Do and Taekwondo's journey to the 1988 Olympics. This book is for the highly experienced and serious Korean martial arts enthusiast and not recommended for inexperienced martial art genre reader.

The author includes the complete story from Grandmaster Lee's training in Karate in Japan while attending college to his relationship with the Korean military that helped him make the Chung Do Kwan the most influential and respected Kwan for many decades, separating it from the other Tang Soo Do Kwans whose members were labeled criminals, members of anti-government rebels and members of organized crime used to diffuse the other Kwans influence in winning government sponsorship for getting Tang Soo Do into the 1988 Olympics as Taekwondo. By examining the life and thought of self-exiled Chinese intellectuals after 1949 by placing them in the context of the global Cold War, Kenneth Kai-chung Yung argues that Chinese intellectuals living in Hong Kong, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities in the 1950s could not escape from the global anti-utopian Cold War currents. Each of them responded to such currents quite differently. Yung also examines different models of nation-building advocated by the émigré intellectuals and argues in his book that these émigré intellectuals inherited directly the multifaceted Chinese liberal tradition that was well developed in the Republican era (1911–1949). Contrary to existing literature that focus mostly on the New Confucians or the liberals, this study highlights that moderate socialists cannot be ignored as an important group of Chinese émigré intellectuals in the first two decades of the Cold War era. This book will inspire readers who are concerned about the prospects for democracy in contemporary China by painting a picture of the Chinese self-exiles’ experiences in the 1950s and 1960s.

Broken Voices is the first English-language book on Korea's rich folksong heritage, and the first major study of the effects of Japanese colonialism on the intangible heritage of its former colony. Folksongs and other music traditions continue to be prominent in South Korea, which today is better known for its technological prowess and the Korean Wave of popular entertainment. In 2009, many Koreans reacted with dismay when China officially recognized the folksong Arirang, commonly regarded as the national folksong in North and South Korea, as part of its national intangible cultural heritage. They were vindicated when versions from both sides of the DMZ were included in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity a few years later. At least on a national level, folksongs thus carry significant political importance. But what are these Korean folksongs about, and who has passed them on over the years, and how? Broken Voices describes how the major repertoires were transmitted and performed in and around Seoul. It sheds light on the training and performance of professional entertainment groups and singers, including kisaeng, the entertainment girls often described as Korean geisha. Personal stories of noted singers describe how the colonial period, the media, the Korean War, and personal networks have affected work opportunities and the standardization of genres. As the object of resentment (and competition) and a source of creative inspiration, the image of Japan has long affected the way in which Koreans interpret their own culture. Roald Maliangkay describes how an elaborate system of heritage management was first established in modern Korea and for what purposes. His analysis uncovers that folksong traditions have changed significantly since their official designation; one major change being gender representation and its effect on sound and performance. Ultimately, Broken Voices raises an important issue of cultural preservation--traditions that fail to attract practitioners and audiences are unsustainable, so compromises may be unwelcome, but imperative.
