This book is the first to explore tango argentino as translocal practice, with a focus on the European context. Beyond that, the book crosses borders in the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods, ranging from participant observation to statistical data evaluation, including optical motion capture for movement analysis. Most of all, it is an important contribution to the emerging field of choreomusicology, focusing on movement and sound structures, dancers and musicians, and the complex relations between all of these factors that all have their share in shaping tango argentino practice.

The late nineteenth century witnessed the birth and popularization of a number of highly emotional musical styles that played on the eagerness of modern Europeans and Americans to toy with the limits of sanity and to taste the ecstasies of living on the edge. This absorbing book explores these popular, passionate musical styles -- which include flamenco, tango and rebetika -- and points out that they arose as well-intentioned intellectuals co-opted the emotional experiences most closely associated with women. In drawing those experiences out of female practice, they defined, objectified, and turned them into strategies of domination, the deepest impact of which was felt, ironically, by modern women. In bridging anthropology, sociology, cultural, media, body and gender studies, this book broadens the base of theory which has ignored the transnational world of Latin and Mediterranean popular culture and makes a powerful statement about the intersection of nationalism, sexuality, identity and authenticity.

From its earliest manifestations on the street corners of nineteenth-century Buenos Aires to its ascendancy as a global cultural form, tango has continually exceeded the confines of the dance floor or the music hall. In Tango Lessons, scholars from Latin America and the United States explore tango's enduring vitality. The interdisciplinary group of contributors—including specialists in dance, music, anthropology, linguistics, literature, film, and fine art—take up a broad range of topics. Among these are the productive tensions between tradition and experimentation in tango nuevo, representations of tango in film and contemporary art, and the role of tango in the imagination of Jorge Luis Borges. Taken together, the essays show that tango provides a kaleidoscopic perspective on Argentina's social, cultural, and intellectual history from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. Argentine Queer Tango: Dance and Sexuality Politics in Buenos Aires investigates changes in tango dancing in Buenos Aires during the first decade of the twenty-first century and its relationship to contemporary social and cultural transformations. Mercedes Liska focuses on one of the proposed alternatives to conventional tango, queer tango, which proposes to rethink one of the alleged icons of a national culture from a feminist conception and to imagine social transformation processes from bodily experiences. Specifically, this book analyzes the value of bodily experiences, the redefinition of the mind-body relationship, and the transformation in the dynamics of the dance from the heteronormative movements of tango. In doing so, Liska addresses the ways in which bodily techniques and gender theories are involved in the denaturing and corporeality decoding of tango and its historical senses as well as the connections between different tango dance practices spread throughout the world.

Tango, unlike salsa, mambo, rumba, samba, candombe and other Latin dances, does not include drums. The beat is less audible and less dominant. However, the beat does exist and is shared by all the tango instruments. The double bass (or upright bass) is the primary carrier of the beat, usually doubled by the pianist's left hand. Violins, bandoneons, and the piano's upper register alternate between the beat and the melody. As tango music developed, the beat became less steady and more changeable. Suspensions, accelerations, and speed changes within a song are the primary ingredients for drama so essential to tango. Melody that carries the lyrics became the primary source of inspiration both for listeners and dancers. While in samba, candombe, milonga and even vals you dance the unchangeable rhythm, in tango you have an opportunity to "dance the melody" or more accurately, "dance the phrase".Of course, there are types of tango where the beat is obvious and easy to hear (Osvaldo Pugliese, for example). Tango is known for its rhythmical complexity and diversity, off beat sections, syncopations and rubatos. Sound familiar? No? Don't worry. This Basic Music Theory for Argentine Tango Dancers guidebook will explain it all and more. You will not only learn to recognize certain musical behaviors but also name them correctly."This accessible text demystifies all of the central musical concepts, providing an easy-to-use guide for those looking to deepen their understanding and interpretation of tango" - Daniela Pucci

Born on the unlit streets of Buenos Aires, tango was inspired by the music of European immigrants who crossed the ocean to Argentina, lured by the promise of a better life. It found its home in the city’s marginal districts, where it was embraced and shaped by young men who told stories of prostitutes, petty thieves, and disappointed lovers through its music and movements. Chronicling the stories told through tango’s lyrics, Mike Gonzalez and Marianella Yanes reveal in Tango how the dance went from slumming it in the brothels and cabarets of lower-class Buenos Aires to the ballrooms of Paris, London, Berlin, and beyond. Tracing the evolution of tango, Gonzalez and Yanes set its music, key figures, and the dance itself in their place and time. They describe how it was not until Paris went crazy for tango just before World War I that it became acceptable for middle-class Argentineans to perform the seductive dance, and they explore the renewed enthusiasm with which each new generation has come to it. Telling the sexy, enthralling story of this stylish and dramatic dance, Tango is a book for casual fans and ballroom aficionados alike.

This book is about traditional tango dance music - that is, the music recorded by dance orchestras in Argentina between the late 1920s and late 1950s. It's mainly a resource for new, inexperienced or even reluctant tango DJs - people who are taking responsibility for providing the music for dance events. It suggests a 'starter collection' of five hundred songs, arranged into ready-made tandas, intended to present the best orchestras and singers, and with the content weighted according to the relative importance of the different orchestras and representing their best periods. Even if you are not a tango DJ this approach (focused directly on tango music as it might be danced) will be interesting for anyone who wishes to know tango music better, or who is open to suggestions as to what is good for dancing (and listening).
