Di zaman kerajaan Mengwi pada abad kedelapan belas, tanggul telaga Pura Taman Ayun pernah sekali waktu jebol. Masyarakat desa berduyun-duyun memperbaiki tanggul itu. Namun, sekuat apa pun mereka membuat penyangga, tanggul itu selalu runtuh. Karena tanggul itu selalu rusak, masyarakat tidak bisa memperoleh cukup air untuk mengairi sawah. Untuk memecahkan masalah ini, raja Mengwi pergi ke Gunung Mangu untuk bersemedi. Dalam meditasinya, ia melihat sosok berpakaian daun pisang kering. Sosok itu menyuruhnya membuat upacara khusus di tanggul Taman Ayun. Raja kemudian melakukan apa yang sosok itu perintahkan. Setelah upacara itu dilakukan, tanggul Taman Ayun tidak pernah lagi jebol. Hingga kini, sejarah itu diingat oleh masyarakat Mengwi dalam sebuah tarian wali (tarian sakral) yang dinamakan Baris Keraras. Tarian unik ini rupanya tak hanya mencirikan makhluk gaib yang dilihat oleh raja Mengwi, namun juga menjadi pengingat bagi setiap orang bahwa alam sekitar hendaknya dijaga agar manusia dapat hidup sejahtera.
