Buku ini menyajikan hal-hal yang yang menarik sebagai hasil kajian yang mendalam tentang kewujudan tari Minangkabau yang bermula dari kegiatan pancak sebagai ilmu bela diri orang Minangkabau sehingga menjadi asas kepada pergerakan tari yang memanifestasikan budaya Minangkabau. Uniknya, kegiatan pancak secara tradisionalnya merupakan aktiviti kaum lelaki Minangkabau. Tetapi kemudian menjadi Tari Minangkabau malah dikuasai pula oleh kaum perempuan sehingga masa kini. Hoerijah Adam, koreografer yang pertama kali mencipta tari Minangkabau berdasarkan usaha hibriditi itu. Pada masa yang sama, Syofyani Yusaf, koreografer seangkatan dengan Hoerijah Adam, turut melakukan penciptaan tari baru berdasarkan usaha hibriditi. Manakala pada dekad selanjutnya, Gusmiati Suid, muncul sebagai koreografer yang memperkasakan kewujudan seni tari Minangkabau di pentas tari dunia berdasarkan eksplorasi pergerakan pancak. Buku ini tidak hanya penting dari segi penemuan yang menarik, tetapi juga mengandungi informasi yang kaya tentang perkembangan tari Minangkabau yang dipelihara sebagai tari tradisi di kampung-kampung orang Minangkabau dan sebagai tari persembahan yang menampilkan budaya Minangkabau masa kini. Bagi masyarakat Minangkabau, proses hibriditi di dalam bidang tari persembahan dianggap sebagai hal yang baik kerana dapat membuka peluang baru kepada peminatnya untuk mencapai prestasi di bidang tari persembahan. Dengan itu, masyarakat Minangkabau dapat menerimanya sebagai mana mereka menerima sesuatu perubahan ibarat pepatahnya “sakali aie gadang, sakali tapian barubah”.

Scholarship on Indonesia musical tradition has long focused on the gamelan of Java and Bali at the expense of the archipelago's many other musical forms. This little-known gong tradition is central to the cultural identity of the Minagkabau people of Sumatra. Gongs and Pop Songs is the first study to chronicle the history and variety of talempong styles. It reveals the continued vitality of older modes in rural communities, while tracing the emergence of newer ones with radically different aesthetic frames and values. The contemporary development in talempong have taken place against a shifting political, social, and economics backdrop that Fraser mines to explore and contexualize the evolution of Minagkabau musical and cultural practices.
