This unique collection of essays from researchers and teacher educators from around the world presents innovative approaches to education theory, critical policy analyses, de-colonializing reformulations of teacher education and a “standard of dissensus” for teacher education. This first volume from the International Teacher Education Research Collective (ITERC) illustrates common themes and problems in the politics of education, in particular, standardization, marketization, governance and policy in education, with both country-specific cases and generally formulated theoretical discussions. The book has three primary aims: to illustrate and critique the ethical, epistemological and political discourses shaping teacher education; to identify and unravel the entanglements of politics, knowledge and ethics in teacher education in a range of international settings; and to revitalize teacher education by proposing and exploring alternative modes of thought and practice. The volume contributes to further reflection and in-depth discussion in education, to the formulation of new areas for educational research and to critical resistance to hegemonic discourses of education. Making an important contribution to contemporary education discourse, this book is a useful guide for education researchers and theorists, teacher educators and postgraduate and higher degree research students in education.

Taking Teaching Seriously expands and enriches discussions about teacher preparation in the United States. Its authors describe the unique contexts for teacher preparation offered by liberal arts institutions and analyze the effects of these programs on their graduates and on K12 schools. They emphasize that the goals and conditions for teacher preparation differ from larger public institutions in several key respects including supervisor-student teacher relationships, philosophical foundations, and approaches to clinical fieldwork. Taken together, the essays provide compelling evidence that educational studies programs in liberal arts colleges and universities constitute a vital component of the teacher education system in the United States.

Course Syllabi in Faculties of Education problematizes one of the least researched phenomena in teacher education, the design of course syllabi, using critical and decolonial approaches. This book looks at the struggles that scholars, policy makers, and educators from a diverse range of countries including Australia, Canada, India, Iran, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the USA, and Zambia face as they design course syllabi in higher education settings. The chapter authors argue that course syllabi are political constructions, representing intense sites of struggles over visions of teacher education and visions of society. As such, they are deeply immersed in what Walter Mignolo calls the “geopolitics of knowledge”. Authors also show how syllabi have become akin to contractual documents that define relations between instructors and students Based on a set of empirically grounded studies that are compared and contrasted, the chapters offer a clearer picture of how course syllabi function within distinct socio-political, economic, and historical contexts of practice and teacher education.

The Disciplining Of Education written by Jerome Satterthwaite and has been published by Stylus Publishing, LLC. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Education categories.
This is the second in the Trentham series on Discourse, Power and Resistance. It explores and critiques government control over educational practice and research in the US and the UK, and examines the impact of this control on teachers and learners. Chapters illustrate the undermining of professional autonomy, the narrowing effect of 'learning outcomes', and the impact of punitive inspection regimes. Other chapters review issues arising from widening participation policies such as the effect of 'therapeutic education' on the self esteem of adult learners, and how the policing and control of student experience undermines the trust between tutor and students. The book offers a timely reminder to those engaged in shaping, delivering or experiencing the effects of current educational policy that it is all too easy to be swept away by contemporary rhetoric, without considering its impact on practitioners, researchers and learners. This book will be wholly relevant, especially for those working with adult learners. It will also be of value to students in education, policy studies and professional training. Book jacket.

Today, large parts of the world are looking to the Nordic model of social organization, and interest in the Nordic comprehensive school system and teacher education arrangements is no exception. A good education is a key to prosperity and well-being. And the quality of students’ education is undoubtedly linked to the quality of their teachers’ education. While teacher education in the Nordic region is globally admired, it also faces new challenges. The leading scholars writing in this volume discuss the challenges and opportunities that professional environments are facing. By providing solid portraits of each area as well as analyses across the region, this book will be a great resource to students, academics in teacher education and schooling as well as social scientists and policy-makers inside and outside the Nordic region. Teacher Education, Diversity, and Community Engagement in Liberal Arts Colleges examines the promise of and issues related to preparing teachers for cultural diversity through community engagement in the liberal arts colleges. This book emphasizes the transformational power of community engagement to both teacher education and the small liberal arts college. Through a careful examination of literature and reflections on practice, Lucy W. Mule underscores the community-engaged approach to teacher education, emphasizing deep relationships with culturally diverse communities, community-based pedagogy, and a consideration of institutional contexts. Building on recent conversations in the areas of teacher education, diversity, and community engagement in liberal arts colleges, she cogently examines a range of issues, from how teacher education's vision, curriculum, and pedagogy can be modified to be more consistent with the goal of educating for cultural diversity through community engagement to some of the program, institutional, and external challenges to community engagement in teacher education. The field of teacher education and small liberal arts colleges will find in Teacher Education, Diversity, and Community Engagement in Liberal Arts Colleges an excellent reason to enact purposeful change and transformation.
