This study investigated the attributes and characteristics indicative of a police officer as an effective School Resource Officer (SRO) in the roles of counselor, educator, and law enforcement officer, while investigating high school teachers' and administrators' perceptions of the SRO's positive impact on school climate and safety. Data were collected from forty-three high school teachers and administrators in two suburban public schools in central Pennsylvania. This qualitative study incorporated the use of an electronic survey, seven open-ended responses, and personal interviews to answer the two research questions. The findings of this study suggest that the SRO is effective in the three roles of counselor, educator and law enforcement officer. The participants felt that the presence of the SRO was the reason that the school environment felt safe. However, they indicated that violent incidents involving violence or drugs still exist within their school. In this study, teachers and administrators also identified specific attributes and characteristics of an effective SRO. The following themes existed: a calm and caring demeanor when interacting with students; a positive, approachable, polite attitude; a focus on safety, community visibility, and efficient communication with students, parents, and district stakeholders; energetic, well-organized, and knowledgeable about legal policies and educational lessons and appropriate involvement in disciplinarily incidents.

A close survey of the landscape of education indicates school climate as a variable that simultaneously influences and is influenced by all other elements, making it both difficult and of vital significance to understand. My initial interest was in school safety and school climate.Even though there is an extensive amount of research written about school climate and school safety, a gap in the literature exists in how school resource officers impact school safety in a rural environment. This became my focused research question. To address this research question, I conducted a qualitative case analysis of two sites. Interviews with students, principals, and a school resource officer were conducted. During and after the data collection process, I employed a coding method with the use of Nvivo to analyze the data. The data showed that there was a disconnect between perceptions of adults and students in the same learning environment that influences school climate. The following recommendations were made: Inclusion of student voice in the hiring process of school resource officers Intentionality with the roles expected of the school resource officer to go beyond the singular service of the law enforcer Inclusion of student voice in matters that impact school climate; specifically, safety, rule/policy creation, and support Utilization in rural settings of the school resource officer by maximizing student to school resource officer ratios. The research will contribute to the field by enriching the literature regarding both school climate, school resource officers, and the interwoven relationship the two share.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the perceptions of secondary school administrators regarding the role and attributes of the effective SRO, the secondary school administrators' perceptions of the effectiveness of the SRO on school stakeholders, and the secondary school administrators' views on how the SRO program could be improved. A total of 25 administrators from suburban school districts in one county in south central Pennsylvania participated in a 20 question survey. Five secondary administrators were interviewed to ask further questions, to provide a deeper understanding, and to provide the participants the opportunity to expand on their survey responses. Memoranda of Understanding from 6 districts were reviewed. With 2 exceptions, the format and contract language varied greatly. The findings of this study indicated that secondary school administrators perceived the ability to investigate, the ability to build rapport, and the ability to collaborate as the main roles of an effective SRO. The participants reported that effective SROs were role models, reliable, approachable, and knowledgeable about law enforcement and building/district facilities and the two most important duties of the SRO were school safety and visibility. Secondary school administrators would recommend the SRO program to other administrators. They perceived the presence of the SRO deters violent acts and that administration, parents, and students feel safer due to the SRO's presence. The SRO was perceived as highly effective with school stakeholders as noted by secondary school administrators. They reported the SRO program could improve by hiring additional SROs and providing more training for both school staff and the SROs.

The purpose of the study was to determine the impact that a School Resource Officer (SRO) and an SRO program in a suburban middle school, located in south-central Pennsylvania, had on improving school safety and security as perceived by the teachers. To ensure reliability and validity of the study, two instruments were used for data collection: The School Safety Environmental Survey from the Center for Safe School and Communities for middle school teachers and a follow up interview session which was given to a random selection of eight teachers. The study first explored the perceptions of 103 teachers in the middle school of which 72 responded to the survey exploring five themes that were deemed important in a previous study contracted by the Center for Safe Schools and Communities in Pennsylvania. The second part of the study used an interview session with eight teachers to investigate and probe more intently into a deeper description of the eight evaluation themes regarding the SRO and the SRO program. Reactions and perceptions that emerged were related to the research question incorporated throughout the study. Results appeared to be consistent in indicating that the SRO and the SRO program had a positive impact on the safety and security of the school, thus the SRO was important in generating a safer environment in the school for everyone. Conclusions point out that the SRO program has been verified to be one of the most effective resources available to school leaders to help ensure the safety and security of students and staff in a school.

This qualitative study was conducted to collect information and data that would assist in understanding the effectiveness of a school resource officer program from the perspective of the High School Principal. In particular, the study focused on the degree to which the experience, knowledge, and skills of school resource officers were utilized effectively in a high school environment. The research is significant in that it explored a relatively new aspect of the school resource officer program, specifically from the perspective of the principal. The data showed that although the SRO’s were performing their expected tasks to provide a safe and secure school environment, other unintended roles developed that further enhanced student learning. These unintended roles allowed the SRO to build trust, develop relationships and deter potential criminal activity. The perspectives of the principals’ indicate SROs are an effective response to threats to school safety and additional training is needed to provide the SRO with the necessary skills and knowledge to address the student’s personal and social needs.

According to the National Association of School Resource Officers (2009), every state in the nation employs school resource officers. The trend, which began in 1991, was initially funded by federal monies. Since that time, school resource officers have remained in schools, gaining popularity as a proactive strategy in fighting against school violence. The purpose of the study was to examine studentsâ and teachersâ perceptions regarding school resource officersâ performance related to the 3 dimensions of their responsibilities: maintaining a safe environment, enforcing the law, and teaching. Data were gathered from 104 teachers and 272 students from a middle school and a high school, totaling 376 participants. An analysis of data was based on 6 research questions and information gathered from participant surveys. A t test for independent samples was then conducted to evaluate the mean differences for the 3 dimensions measured in the survey. The following grouping variables were used in the comparisons for each dimension: students and teachers, male and female students, male and female teachers, teachers with varied years of experience, middle and high school students, and middle and high school teachers. A significance difference was found between middle school students and high school students regarding each dimension, suggesting that middle school students observed school resource officers actively performing each role to a higher degree than did high school students. There was also a significant difference between teachers and students regarding the role of maintaining a safe environment and enforcing the law, suggesting that teachers observed school resource officers more active in these roles than in the role of counseling. A significant difference was also found between high school teachers and middle school teachers regarding the role of enforcing the law. High school teachers observed enforcement of law more than middle school teachers. This study suggests th.

Over the past several decades there has been an increase in school shootings across the nation. In response, School Resource Officer programs have been created in addition to increased security measures. It is believed that the increase of police officers in schools has funneled students into the criminal justice system, through what is called the school-to-prison pipeline. The purpose of the study was to examine the perceptions of stakeholders of the impact School Resource Officers have on the education of youth in Arkansas. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to explore the perceptions of School Resource Officers, law enforcement agencies, school administrators, and educators of SROs' presence in schools. Surveys were distributed to each of the four groups to gather quantitative data on the prevalence, characteristics, roles, and perceived effectiveness of SROs in schools. A qualitative interview was conducted with members of each group to gain deeper insights into their views of the impact SROs have on students' academic performance, the roles of an SRO, their perceptions on the school-to-prison pipeline, and suggestions for future SROs. According to the participants, SROs have a positive effect on student's academic performance due to an increased sense of safety, positive relationship with students, faculty/staff, and parents. Additional positive effects included reduction in physical fights/assaults and drug and weapons violations, shorter response time should a violation occur, mentorship of students, sense of order, positive climate, and crime deterrence.
