Peran teaching factory adalah memaksimalkan peran sekolah dalam menunjang pesatnya laju industri. Dengan melihat berbagai tantangan pendidikan kejuruan dalam menjawab kebutuhan dunia industri, maka pendidikan kejuruan (SMK) harus merevitalisasi diri melalui teaching factory dan atau learning factory, yaitu pembelajaran dalam lingkungan pabrik, “learning” in a “factory” environment. Di sini proses, tujuan, dan penilaian kegiatan belajar-mengajar harus seperti pengaturan industri, agar upaya untuk mengintegrasikan pembelajaran di kelas dan praktik dalam dunia industri dalam proses pembelajaran teaching factory dapat terlaksana dengan baik.

Model teaching factory berbasis kecerdasan artifisial (Artificial Intelligence/AI) pada pendidikan menengah vokasi (SMK) memiliki karateristik dan penekanan pada pembekalan para peserta didik dengan kompetensi dan karakter kewirausahaan (technopreneurship) yang relevan dengan mitra industri (DU-DI). Isu-isu tantangan adalah: 1) Tenaga Kerja, peserta didik dan guru belum teredukasi dengan baik oleh pengetahuan dan pembelajaran kecerdasan artifisial; 2) Digitalisasi/infrastruktur belum memadai; 3) Kolaborasi Industri (DU-DI)-Sekolah dalam mengasah keterampilan peserta didik; 4) Kapasitas pelatihan berbasis kecerdasan artifisial; dan 5) Regulasi/kebijakan sekolah. Keberhasilan model teaching factory berbasis kecerdasan artifisial (Artificial Intelligence/AI) dapat dilakukan melalui tiga tahapan yaitu: Tahap I: Desain Produk. Pada tahap ini, dilakukan persiapan awal produk yaitu mempersiapkan sumber daya manusia (peserta didik dan guru), potensi sekolah, anggaran, bahan baku, infrastruktur dan mitra (DU-DI) yang terkait. Tahap II. Merancang Prototype. Pada tahap ini, melakukan pengembangan berupa gagasan dan pembuatan prototype awal (generasi I, II, III) melalui penelitian dan pengembangan (R&D) hingga pengujian produk. Tahap III: Presentasi Produk dan Pemasaran Masal. Pada tahap ini melakukan promosi ke pihak konsumen/ pengguna produk dan mitra industri (DU-DI), hingga tercapai pemasaran masal produk (siklus improvement) di pasaran. Buku ini diharapkan menjadi sebuah informasi yang menarik dan bermanfaat bagi pendidik, peserta didik tingkat pendidikan menengah baik SMK/SMA.
