Korean Honorifics And Politeness In Second Language Learning written by Lucien Brown and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book investigates the ways that advanced speakers of Korean as a second language perceive, use and learn the complexities of the Korean honorifics system. Despite their advanced proficiency in Korean, the study shows that the honorifics use of these speakers diverges in crucial ways from native speaker norms. It is argued that, rather than reflecting the language competence of these speakers as such, this usage is linked to questions of the identity of language learners and foreigners in Korean society. In addition, it shows the influence of conflicting ideologies regarding the meaning of politeness . This argument is backed up by rich data collected through mixed methods (discourse completion tests, role-plays, natural interactions, introspective interviews), allowing for a detailed picture of how the honorifics use of second language speakers emerges in context. The book concludes by discussing the implications of the study for politeness research, interlanguage pragmatics and language pedagogy."

This book, comprising two parts, is concerned with both the science and the art of foreign language teaching, with a particular, but not exclusive, focus on Asia. Under the theme of “Theoretical foundation and research”, Part 1 of this book informs the readers about recent efforts in theoretical and empirical research which have had an impact on foreign language teaching or promise to yield results that will shape its future. These studies, not just from the domain of foreign language teaching but also its primary feeder disciplines of linguistics and second language acquisition, offer the necessary theoretical and conceptual foundation for both current and future research and practice. As its theme “Classroom practice and evaluation studies” suggests, Part 2 focuses on new and innovative developments in curricular and classroom practice, all built upon insights from research in the above-mentioned disciplines and poised to become standard practices. These projects include qualitative and quantitative evaluation studies which have yielded insightful data for the refinement and continued development of the projects and their underlying theoretical concepts.

Innovative Methods in Korean Language Teaching showcases research-based and experience-based contributions and reflections on the potential of adopting technological and non-technological innovations to promote Korean language students’ learning. The chapters included in this book consider a wide range of innovative technologies and approaches, such as large language models, virtual reality solutions, metaverse platforms, multimodal teaching, and critical pedagogy, and represent a variety of geographical learning contexts from North America to Europe, from Korea to the broader Asia-Pacific region. Overall, these contributions make the case for embracing new technologies instead of banning them and for accepting pedagogical shifts that take into consideration contemporary understandings of the communication, teaching, and learning processes. This book will be of interest to graduate students, researchers, and practitioners of Korean language education and to those working on language teaching and learning in general, to inform future teaching practices through careful consideration of contemporary technologies and teaching approaches.
