This guidebook is divided into four main parts. In Part 1: Foundations of Success for Men of Color, the theoretical perspectives undergirding a revised teaching and learning enterprise that prioritizes the success of men of color are discussed. Also explored are common barriers and challenges facing men of color that necessitate enhanced teaching practices. A key focus of these barriers are on environmental factors (external pressures that occur outside of college that influence student success in college) and on the socialization of men of color in education. Parts II and III articulate the promising practices derived from the comprehensive study of faculty. Specifically, Part II: Building Relationships with Men of Color discusses the establishment of personal relationships with men of color as a foundational precursor to efficacious teaching practices. In Part III: Promising Teaching Practices, the authors address the role of relevancy and interactivity (among other factors) in effectively communicating academic content to men of color. The guidebook concludes with Part IV: A Note to Instructional Leaders with strategies that academic leaders can employ to inculcate the values and approaches discussed in this volume in their departments and colleges.

This volume dedicated to the engagement of African American males in community colleges furthers the research agenda focused on improving the educational outcomes of African American males. The theme engagement also supports the anti-deficit approach to research on African American males developed by renowned research scholars. The true success of African American males in community colleges rests on how well these institutions engage young men into their institutions. This will require community colleges to examine policies, pedagogical strategies, and institutional practices that alienate African American males and fosters a culture of underachievement. The authors who have contributed to this volume all speak from the same script which proves than when African American males are properly engaged in an education that is culturally relevant, they will succeed. Therefore, this book will benefit ALL who support the education of African American males. It is our intent that this book will contribute to the growing body of knowledge that exists in this area as well as foster more inquiry into the achievement of African American males. The book offers three approaches to understanding the engagement of African American males in community college, which includes empirical research, policy perspectives and programmatic initiatives.

Teaching Accelerated and Corequisite Composition is the first book to compile on-the-ground advice and teaching strategies specifically curated for accelerated and corequisite writing courses. Trailblazers in the field from colleges across the United States—who developed a foundation for corequisites by facilitating equity and accessibility for marginalized students—speak to a range of topics and demographics, offering support for instructors and practical advice for improving student success. The book primarily explores accelerated composition through the lens of two-year colleges to answer a central question in the field: to what extent do educators need to alter two-year college curricular design? The contributors also delve into assessment, a crucial process for instructors and their students transitioning to accelerated learning; the key role that reading plays in the writing process; and noncognitive learning, an area of study that has been associated with accelerated learning since its inception. Together these thirteen chapters provide instructors with a strategic approach to teaching accelerated and corequisite composition. Teaching Accelerated and Corequisite Composition points toward a new way of approaching first-year composition: a method of instruction that fosters the growth and success of writers who were once considered underprepared for college writing and are now achieving unprecedented success.

Empowering Men Of Color On Campus written by Derrick R. Brooms and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-07 with Education categories.

While recruitment efforts toward men of color have increased at many colleges and universities, their retention and graduation rates still lag behind those of their white peers. Men of color, particularly black and Latino men, face a number of unique challenges in their educational careers that often impact their presence on campus and inhibit their collegiate success. Empowering Men of Color on Campus examines how men of color negotiate college through their engagement in Brothers for United Success (B4US), an institutionally-based male-centered program at a Hispanic Serving Institution. Derrick R. Brooms, Jelisa Clark, and Matthew Smith introduce the concept of educational agency, which is harbored in cultural wealth and demonstrates how ongoing B4US engagement empowers the men’s efforts and abilities to persist in college. They found that the cultural wealth(s) of the community enhanced the students’ educational agency, which bolstered their academic aspirations, academic and social engagement, and personal development. The authors demonstrate how educational agency and cultural wealth can be developed and refined given salient and meaningful immersions, experiences, engagements, and communal connections.

This book encourages leadership educators and practitioners to understand the importance of black male leadership on college campuses in today’s world. As the push to make higher education more culturally relevant and inclusive, the need for these educators to critically engage in their work to create intentional and developmental experiences for their black male leaders is needed now more than ever. The contexts outlined in this book illustrate the need to see Black men's leadership as a critical, dynamic, and ever-evolving component on college campuses that requires intentionality to best develop, serve, and holistically engage Black men in leadership learning. This book is intended to be a practical and scholarly resource to aid in the awareness of Black men in college, Black men's leadership identities and experiences, and the growing need to assist this population's success in college and beyond. Engaging Black Men In College Through Leadership Learning centers on leadership and Black identity as it tackles the intersecting identities of maleness, Blackness, and leadership identity as it encourages educators to consider the importance of the college environment in shaping the next generation of Black men collegiate leaders. In addition, this scholarship provides insight into Black men's leadership experiences in various contexts - including fraternity life, first-year experiences, and student organizations, while capturing the collective experiences of Black men as leadership learners at different types of institutions, including HBCUs, Community Colleges, PWIs and a host of other institution types. This resource is for leadership educators and practitioners to develop Black men as leaders on today’s college campuses, where our global society continues to navigate challenges. This book also situates more nuanced topics such as mental health, trans identity, graduate education, and the experiences of former foster care youth, which provides insight into the experiences of Black men as leaders on college campuses. These contexts illustrate the need to see Black men's leadership as a critical, dynamic, and ever-evolving component on college campuses that requires intentionality to best develop, serve, and holistically engage Black men in leadership learning. We encourage readers of this text to consider how black men’s experiences with leadership are woven into the fabric of your college campus and how you can be an advocate for more critical and sustainable ways to engage Black men in college through leadership learning.
