This conference is the first of what is expected to be a sequence of similar conferences on the teaching of the large and important field of condensed matter physics. The objective is to bring together active research workers and teachers for the discussion of frontier topics, and for cooperative efforts to produce, or at least, to plan the production of curricular materials on the topic of the conference. Reports of the lectures by Nobel Laureates, G Binnig and K von Klitzing are included.

In a knowledge-based society, research into fundamental physics plays a vital role not only in the enhancement of human knowledge but also in the development of new technology that affects everyday life. The international symposium series Frontiers of Fundamental Physics (FFP) regularly brings together eminent scholars and researchers working in various areas in physics to exchange expertise, ideas, results, and new research perspectives. The twelfth such symposium, FFP12, took place at the University of Udine, Italy, and covered diverse fields of research: astrophysics, high energy physics and particle physics, theoretical physics, gravitation and cosmology, condensed matter physics, statistical physics, computational physics, and mathematical physics. Importantly, it also devoted a great deal of attention to physics education research, teacher training in modern physics, and popularization of physics. The high scientific level of FFP12 was guaranteed by the careful selection made by scientific coordinators from among 250 submissions from 28 countries across the world. During the three days of the conference, nine general talks were delivered in plenary sessions, 29 invited talks were given in specific topic areas, and 59 oral presentations were made. This book presents a selection of the best contributions at FFP12 with the aim of acquainting readers with the most important recent advances in fundamental physics and in physics education and teacher development.

This conference was dedicated to the memory of the great scientist and teacher I Ya Pomeranchuk on the occasion of his 90th birthday. It was multidisciplinary and covered those fields of physics where Pomeranchuk made outstanding contributions — including high energy physics, quantum field theory, theory of liquid helium, condensed matter physics, physics of electromagnetic processes in matter, and astrophysics. Most of the plenary talks and reports were given by Pomeranchuk's former students and coworkers. The proceedings volume provides an excellent review of some important areas of modern physics and reflects the Pomeranchuk school's contributions to modern physics. It is useful for graduate students, lecturers and researchers in high energy physics, quantum field theory and condensed matter physics. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: • Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings® (ISTP® / ISI Proceedings) • Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings) Contents:The Life and Legacy of Pomeranchuk (L B Okun)Cosmology at the Turn of Centuries (A D Dolgov)Anisotropic Colored Superfluids (J Hosek)String Models and Hadron Excited States on the Regge Trajectories (G S Sharov)Spherical Spinors on the Sphere (A A Abrikosov, Jr)Induced Quantum Long-Range Interactions in General Relativity (I B Khriplovich & G G Kirilin)Radiation from Chiral Cosmic Strings (E O Babichev & V I Dokuchaev)Massive Primordial Black Holes in Hybrid Inflation (S G Rubin)Metallic Conductivity in Disordered Electron Systems (B N Narozhny)Quasi-Solvable Quantum Many-Body Systems of Inozemtsev Type (T Tanaka)and other papers Readership: Researchers and graduate students in astro-, high-energy, low-temperature, mathematical and theoretical physics. What are acceptable modern standards of instruction in physics? In August, 1960, 86 physicists from 32 nations met at the UNESCO HOUSE in Paris to discuss individual viewpoints and draft resolutions to represent universal thought on this subject. The speeches, papers, dicussions, exhibits, and motion pictures at the Conference mirrored the breadth and contrasts of contemporary physics instruction, vitally important to both scientifically advanced and scientifically underdeveloped nations.Speeches on methods ranged in subject matter from individual teacher-student relations to nationally televised lectures; from preparation for the specialist to techniques for informing the general public; from revision of the traditional curriculum to provision of research facilities for teachers. These suggestions and reports from around the world, presented in this book, will be helpful to all educators, and particularly to those with responsibility for training physicists. Its chapters deal with matters such as testing, selection of students, training of teachers, the use of audio-visual aids, and activities of professional organizations.

This book discusses novel research on and practices in the field of physics teaching and learning. It gathers selected high-quality studies that were presented at the GIREP-ICPE-EPEC 2017 conference, which was jointly organised by the International Research Group on Physics Teaching (GIREP); European Physical Society – Physics Education Division, and the Physics Education Commission of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). The respective chapters address a wide variety of topics and approaches, pursued in various contexts and settings, all of which represent valuable contributions to the field of physics education research. Examples include the design of curricula and strategies to develop student competencies—including knowledge, skills, attitudes and values; workshop approaches to teacher education; and pedagogical strategies used to engage and motivate students. This book shares essential insights into current research on physics education and will be of interest to physics teachers, teacher educators and physics education researchers around the world who are working to combine research and practice in physics teaching and learning.
