Teaching reading comprehension to English learners (ELs) in secondary schools presents unique challenges, as these students must navigate the complexities of academic texts and the intricacies of language acquisition. Effective instruction requires a research-based approach that considers the diverse linguistic, cultural, and cognitive backgrounds of these learners. Recent studies highlight the importance of integrating strategies that build both language proficiency and content knowledge, essential for helping ELs develop the skills needed to comprehend complex materials. Fostering metacognitive awareness through strategies like summarizing, questioning, and making connections can empower students to become active and strategic readers. This approach recognizes the need for a supportive, inclusive classroom environment that encourages language development while promoting academic achievement in content areas. Further research may help educators provide English learners with the tools to thrive as capable readers in secondary school. Teaching Reading Comprehension to English Learners in Secondary School: A Research-Based Approach explores various aspects of teaching reading comprehension to English Second Language (ESL) learners in secondary schools. It examines current challenges and evidence-based strategies in reading comprehension. This book covers topics such as language learning, reading strategies, and teacher training, and is a useful resource for academicians, researchers, and scientists.

This volume extends the Task-Based Language Teaching: Issues, Research and Practice books series by deliberately exploring the potential of task-based language teaching (TBLT) in a range of EFL contexts. It is specifically devoted to providing empirical accounts about how TBLT practice is being developed and researched in diverse educational contexts, particularly where English is not the dominant language. By including contributions from settings as varied as Japan, China, Korea, Venezuela, Turkey, Spain, and France, this collection of 13 studies provides strong indications that the research and implementation of TBLT in EFL settings is both on the rise and interestingly diverse, not least because it must respond to the distinct contexts, constraints, and possibilities of foreign language learning. The book will be of interest to SLA researchers and students in applied linguistics and TESOL. It will also be of value to course designers and language teachers who come from a broad range of formal and informal educational settings encompassing a wide range of ages and types of language learners.

This book is about designing instruction that makes comprehension the priority in reading and in content area study. The comprehension model described responds to calls from literacy experts and professional organizations for inquiry-based instruction that prepares readers to be active meaning makers who are adept at both critical and creative thinking. Comprehension First introduces a before, during, after Comprehension Problem Solving (CPS) process that helps readers ask key questions so they arrive at a substantial comprehension product-"big ideas" based on themes and conclusions drawn from literary works and expository texts. The book further describes how to orchestrate research-based best practices to build lessons and units around big ideas and important questions. In this age of multiple literacies, all of us must learn to be more nimble users of Literacy 2.0 communication tools. Mastering problem solving is at the core of this challenge. Comprehension First embraces this challenge by inviting present and future teachers to examine WHY and HOW these tools can be used more purposefully to achieve the pre-eminent literacy goal of deep comprehension.

The Transmission Of Anglo Norman written by Richard P. Ingham and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This investigation contributes to issues in the study of second language transmission by considering the well-documented historical case of Anglo-Norman. Within a few generations of the establishment of this variety, its phonology diverged sharply from that of continental French, yet core syntactic distinctions continued to be reliably transmitted. The dissociation of phonology from syntax transmission is related to the age of exposure to the language in the experience of ordinary users of the language. The input provided to children acquiring language in a naturalistic communicative setting, even though one of a school institution, enabled them to acquire target-like syntactic properties of the inherited variety. In addition, it allowed change to take place along the lines of transmission by incrementation. A linguistic environment combining the 'here-and-now' aspects of ordinary first language acquisition with the growing cognitive complexity of an educational meta-language appears to have been adequate for this variety to be transmitted as a viable entity that encoded the public life of England for centuries.
