Reverence is an ancient virtue that survives among us in half-forgotten patterns of civility and moments of inarticulate awe. Reverence gives meaning to much that we do, yet the word has almost passed out of our vocabulary. Reverence, says philosopher and classicist Paul Woodruff, begins in an understanding of human limitations. From this grows the capacity to be in awe of whatever we believe lies outside our control -- God, truth, justice, nature, even death. It is a quality of character that is especially important in leadership and in teaching, although it figures in virtually every human relationship. It transcends religious boundaries and can be found outside religion altogether. Woodruff draws on thinking about this lost virtue in ancient Greek and Chinese traditions and applies lessons from these highly reverent cultures to today's world. The book covers reverence in a variety of contexts -- the arts, leadership, teaching, warfare, and the home -- and shows how essential a quality it is to a well-functioning society. First published by Oxford University Press in 2001, this new edition of Reverence is revised and expanded. It contains a foreword by Betty Sue Flowers, Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin, a new preface, two new chapters -- one on the sacred and one on compassion -- and an epilogue focused on renewing reverence in our own lives.

Excerpt from Teaching the Teacher: A First Book in Teacher Training A recent book intimates that there are three kinds of Sunday-school teachers. Some are so poor that they must be forgiven by those who had the disadvantage of having Christianity interpreted through their words and spirit. Some are so colorless, so neutral, so neither poor nor rich, that they are forgotten by those who in years of youth had no Christian impression made upon them by their responsible teachers. Some are so good and wise that they are forever remembered with that honor which is partly love and partly reverence. Such teachers of Christianity have an imperishable memory. It is to help those who aspire to play their part in fulfilling the Great Commission, and thereby to achieve that Imperishable memory, that this teacher-training textbook has been prepared. The book specializes on the history of God's redeeming grace. It reviews Old Testament history, disclosing the stream of God's redeeming purposes flowing down through the older times. It reviews New Testament history, disclosing the broadening and deepening of that purpose for us men and for mankind in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and his Church. It reviews the history of that Church in the world. It introduces the student to the study of the human spirit, made in the likeness of God. It discusses the organization of the Church in order to carry out the Great Commission, particularly among the children and youth whose minds and hearts and consciences God has designed for that spiritual development which we call religious education. Abraham Joshua Heschel, considered to be one of America's most provocative spiritual voices, distinguished himself in America as a philosophy, theologian and moral spokesperson on major social issues. This study is an analysis of his thought and traces its origin to Jewish mysticism and Hassidism. Dr. Gross applies Heschel's philosophy which stresses the development of the inquirer's ability to wonder and amazement at the mystery of being. Education, according to Heschel, must endow the enquirer with a sense of significant being and capacity to revere the world. "The centrality of the teacher in education for Heschel", explains Rabbi Gross, "came from a long tradition in Judaism. But that tradition also concerned itself with the relationship of student to teacher. In Judaism the status of the teacher was that of spiritual father ... We can see from Heschel's expectations of the teacher/counselor that they must serve as a role model for students. The approach must be, in essence, a holistic one. The counselor must strive to harmonize each person's life with the demands of the material and spiritual worlds. Heschel would want each student to search for wholeness in a manner that is personally appealing and meaningful. The process would have to be highly individualized and involve also parents, clergy, family and friends". This book investigates the intricacies of Heschel's educational philosophy in depth for the first time.

A translation and discussion of the central Confucian text on education, Xueji (On Teaching and Learning), influential in China from the Han dynasty to the present day. Written over two and a half millennia ago, the Xueji (On Teaching and Learning) is one of the oldest and most comprehensive works on educational philosophy and teaching methods, as well as a consideration of the appropriate roles of teachers and students. The Xueji was included in the Liji (On Ritual), one of the Five Classics that became the heart of the educational system during China’s imperial era, and it contains the ritual protocols adopted by the Imperial Academy during the Han dynasty. Chinese Philosophy on Teaching and Learning provides a new translation of the Xueji along with essays exploring this work from both Western and Chinese perspectives. Contributors examine the roots of educational thought in classical Chinese philosophy, outline similarities and differences with ideas rooted in classical Greek thought, and explore what the Xueji can offer educators today. Xu Di is Professor of Educational Foundations at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and the author of A Comparison of the Educational Ideas and Practices of John Dewey and Mao Zedong in China. Hunter McEwan is Professor of Education at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and the coeditor (with Kieran Egan) of Narrative in Teaching, Learning, and Research.
