This volume explores the myriad of techniques and methodological approaches that are being used in breast cancer research. The authors critically evaluate of the advantages and disadvantages of current methodologies, starting with the tools available for understanding the architecture of the human breast, including its tissue and cellular composition. The volume discusses the importance of functional studies in breast cancer research, especially with the help of laser capture microdissection, which allows the separation of small amounts of tissue, as well as specific cells, for biochemical analysis. In addition, the authors address methodologies including stem cell separation, which has helped in significantly understanding their role in normal breast development, but also further the understanding of breast cancer and its therapeutic management. The use of in vitro techniques and established cell lines for mechanistic studies in chemotherapeutic approaches have been invaluable will be discussed. Imaging techniques for evaluating in vitro and in vivo behavior of normal and cancerous breast tissue will be explored, as it provides a better understanding of the physiopathology of cancer. The volume will also discuss the molecular analysis of gene function in breast cancer through the transcriptomic and epigenomic profile. More importantly, the advancement of more refined techniques in sequencing will be covered. This monograph will be a comprehensive, authoritative and timely, as it addresses the emerging approaches used in breast cancer research.

Breast cancer is a recognized disease around the world with varying patient outcomes based on the type of breast cancer, access to healthcare and other factors. Survival rates for breast cancer are significantly lower in metastatic cases than localized cases. Early diagnosis and effective treatments for the efficient management of breast cancer are now in demand , as they help to prolong patient life. There have been many breakthrough developments in the molecular biology of breast cancer research in recent times. Advancements in diagnostic techniques (imaging and biomarker detection) for breast cancer have improved the screening of the disease and have improved patient outcomes. Despite these enhancements, the disease is still lethal for patients and the search for a cure requires a complete understanding of the disease. Current Advances in Breast Cancer Research: A Molecular Approach presents a comprehensive overview of current basic and translational research on the subject. The 14 chapters of the book give emphasis to current knowledge about breast cancer, ongoing challenges, and innovative research findings by different research groups. Readers will find detailed information about breast cancer biology, genetics, clinical diagnostics and treatments. Additional information for advanced readers in life sciences, such as techniques relevant to genomics (including genetic fingerprinting), proteomics, metabolomics and medicine (such as imaging and molecular diagnostics) is also provided. The combination of both basic and advanced information makes this book a useful reference to the student and researcher, alike, seeking an understanding about breast cancer at a molecular level.

Too many people contributed to the completion of this volume to allow acknowledg ment of all the individual efforts, but we particularly thank the reviewers whose input into the editorial process was invaluable and the authors of these chapters who revised their text, sometimes more than once, to bring it to the high standards set by the Editors. The Com mittee gratefully acknowledges the support ofVysis, Inc. , in the publication of a color figure in Chapter 19, by S. Weber-Hall and Trevor Dale. Finally, we wish to express our heartfelt appreciation to Margot Ip and Bonnie Asch, who worked long and hard to bring this volume to fruition. Margaret C. Neville for the Committee on Mammary Gland Biology Preface One of the most exciting and beneficial developments in research on mammary gland biology and breast cancer has been the influx of increased funding to support this work. This influx, which has been due primarily to the tireless efforts of breast cancer activists to gamer addi tional money from various federal and state sources, has led to a rapid expansion of research efforts by attracting numerous new investigators into the field. These new investigators include students, postdoctoral fellows, and scientists from other fields.

Cancer on the Margins presents the findings of the Ontario Breast Cancer Community Research Iniative, an organization created to investigate the experiences of women with breast cancer from marginalized and underrepresented groups. The authors examine the psychosocial needs of women living with breast cancer, while investigating differences in treatment, care, and survivorship amongst Aboriginal women, women of colour, francophone women, lesbians, as well as young women, lower-income women, and women in rural areas. Structured as a guide for similar research, Cancer on the Margins provides a "start to finish" format that reveals the complexities of doing such work at each stage of research, beginning with the study design and ending with the dissemination of results. The authors address the challenges of working with and speaking for these groups of women, the tension between description and interpretation, and the challenge for qualitative work to present findings that positively influence the circumstances of research participants. With a strong commitment to social justice, this volume also shows how participatory research can lead to social change, and indicates effective ways to ensure that research not only reaches, but is also employed in, the communities it intends to serve. Bridging the gap between a wide range of audiences, this vitally important work will be of interest to health professionals, new researchers, policy makers, new researchers, and experienced investigators, as well as the public.

Historically, social researchers have shown a willingness to exploit new technologies to enhance, facilitate and support their various activities. However, arguably no other technological development has influenced the landscape of social research as rapidly and fundamentally as the Internet. This collection avoids both uncritical embrace and wholesale dismissal by considering some of the key literature in the field of Internet research methods. Volume One: Core Issues, Debates and Controversies in Internet Research introduces themes and issues that run across all four volumes such as: epistemology, ontology and methodology in the online world; access, social divisions and the ′digital divide′; and the ethics of online research. Volume Two: Taking Research Online - Internet Survey and Sampling addresses the range of resources, digital archives and Internet-based data sources that exist online from relatively straightforward and practical guides to such material through to more polemical pieces which consider problems relating to the use, access and analysis of online data and resources. Volume Three: Taking Research Online - Qualitative Approaches considers the broad range of approaches to conducting researching via or ′in′ the Internet. The focus is on conventional methods that have been ′taken online′, and which in doing so, have become transformed in scope and character. Volume Four: Research ′On′ and ′In′ the Internet - Investigating the Online World follows logically from that which precedes it in exploring how social research has been ′taken online′, not simply through the deployment of existing methods and techniques via the Internet, but in researchers′ increasing recognition and investigation of the online world as a sphere of human interaction - a socio-cultural arena to be explored ′from the desktop′ as it were.

This book upholds the premise that knowledge about research process and design is mandatory in today's health care arena, and that all nurses and midwives need to understand research findings and their implication for changing practice. This edition is completely revised with many new chapters. The text has been restructured into three sections. Section 1: Research Awareness sets the scene for the importance of nursing and midwifery research and provides an overview of research theory and practice as processes. Chapters on searching for and reviewing the literature provide detailed advice for undergraduates and facilitate access to research articles online. One of the new chapters discusses ethical issues in Australia and New Zealand. Section 2: Appreciation and Application provides a detailed discussion of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research approaches with many useful examples from the clinical area. Section 3: Conducting primary research is new and is designed to accommodate both undergraduate and postgraduate students in their research effort. Writing research proposals may be a requirement for undergraduates in their research program and postgraduates will find the information useful for undertaking a higher degree or applying for university or external funding. This final Section is also useful as a guide on disseminating and publishing conducted research findings.
