Usually firms introduce new technology in an incremental way, wisely seeking to minimise the adverse effects which business and employees might face. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes technological discontinuities occur when radically different technological systems and working practices are implemented, with the possibility of widespread disruption and conflict. This book looks at this topical issue through the experiences of the international giants of the Finnish paper industry - an industry at the cutting edge of fundamental technological innovation.

The point of departure is a competence-destroying technological discontinuity. We posit that the type of complementary assets (generic vs. specialized) needed to commercialize the new technology is critical in determining the industry- and firm-level performance in the post-discontinuity time period. If generic complementary assets are needed to commercialize the new technology, we posit that industry-level performance will decline. In contrast, if specialized complementary assets are needed to commercialize the new technology, we hypothesize the industry-level performance will improve. Moreover, we predict interfirm performance differentials based on a firm's financial strength and its R&D capability. In particular, a firm's financial strength is posited to have a more positive impact on firm-level performance in the post-discontinuity period if the new technology can be commercialized through generic complementary assets. In contrast, a firm's R&D capability is hypothesized to have a more positive effect on firm-level performance if the new technology can be commercialized through specialized complementary assets. We draw on times series and panel data over a twenty-six year period in four industries to more fully understand post-discontinuity performance, while controlling for pre-discontinuity factors.

Excerpt from Technological Discontinuities: The Emergence of Fiber Optics This pattern of discontinuity occurs when new firms entering the existing business introduce a product with very different properties from the existing ones. The new product is so unrelated to the existing one that traditional firms cannot use existing processes to replicate the new product since a new process is required. Although initially crude and expensive, the new product's higher performance in at least one dimension enable it to enter niche markets. As the dominant design (abernathy, 1978) for the new product emerges, it introduces both major product and process changes compared to theexisting product which is being changed incrementally to improve productivity. Technological innovations occasionally arise that are so distinctive that they have the potential to render previous products or services obsolete in a given technological sector. Technological discontinuities---radical innovations in a given technological sector---periodically occur as part of the process of technological evolution. Such events may lead to the disruption of established technology-based firms in similar, but potentially outdated, technology sectors. By this process, the technological discontinuity transitions to a disruptive technology. In this dissertation it is hypothesized that the degree to which discontinuities become disruption events will depend on the nature of the firm facing the technological shift, the degree to which the incumbent firm's core-competencies align with the actual, or perceived requirements of the new technology, and the timing of detection of the discontinuity event in relation to the establishment of an emerging marketplace for the new technology. Firms based on the previous generation of technology may struggle to incorporate the new technology into their product lines, or disregard the new innovation as being undesirable to their existing customer base. How companies react to such discontinuous technologies will determine if the new technology will become a disruptive force to the profitability or continued existence of established firms in a given market segment. Technological discontinuities are an unavoidable fact of business life, but the process by which these discontinuities transition into firm disruptions is not one that is inevitable for all firms facing such a shift in their technological horizons. Effective assessments of the risk posed by the discontinuity, and the accurate communication of information regarding the event inside an organization self-aware enough to recognize the nature of the threat, will help management teams to formulate effective strategies for coping with the changes required to compete in a new market. This thesis examines the factors that may contribute toward the threat of firm disruption from discontinuous technological innovations, explores the development of a prototype tool for disruption assessment, and examines management strategies for countering the threat and capitalizing on the opportunities inherent in these events.

Innovations based on radically new technologies are believed to create advantages for entrants over incumbents in the relevant markets. Under what circumstances is this true? To what extent do incumbents' disadvantages stem from their failure to make timely commitments to new capabilities and new strategies as opposed to their inability to implement those commitments effectively? We explore those questions in relation to recent literature in economics and organization theory and introduce the concept of the "value network." Historical evidence suggests that entrants find greatest advantage when innovations disrupt established trajectories of technological progress, a circumstance associated with moves to new value networks. The incumbent's disadvantage, hence, seems to be associated with an inability to change strategies, not technologies.

Financial Market Reactions Following Technological Discontinuities written by Mary Benner and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with categories.

A large body of literature has explored the challenges of technological change for established firms. Much of this work has focused on factors internal to firms, such as inertial routines or managers' cognitive limitations that constrain incumbents' development of new capabilities and response to new technologies. But institutional pressures arising from financial markets and the securities analysts who mediate such markets likely also play a role in whether and how incumbent firms respond to technological change. We know little about how financial markets and securities analysts react as an incumbent firm is faced with a radical technological discontinuity that threatens to substitute for the existing technology. Understanding such reactions is critical, as they further influence whether and how incumbents respond to technological discontinuities. In this article, I explore securities analysts' reactions to incumbent firms faced with technological discontinuities in two industries: digital technology in photography, and Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) technology in wireline telecommunications. I find that these discontinuities go largely unmentioned in analysts' reports and appear to have little influence on analysts' recommendations or stock prices even for several years. The findings suggest further that analysts and investors continue to reward incumbents for cash flows arising from focusing on the existing business and technology despite the increasing certainty of technological obsolescence.
