Technologies Of Human Rights Representation written by Alexandra S. Moore and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-01 with Political Science categories.

The speed of technological development, from cell phones to artificial intelligence, opens up exciting new opportunities for promoting human flourishing. It also raises grave risks, threatening not only personal privacy and dignity but also our collective survival. Technologies of Human Rights Representation brings together three fields of research critical to securing our future: changing technologies, human rights, and representation. For each of these fields, this book asks key questions: How can we open the black box of technological advances so that we can more fully understand their effects upon our lives? What can we do to make sure that these effects align with the values of human rights? And how does the way we talk about technology and rights—from military reports and corporate marketing to human rights reports and poetry—amplify or diminish our capacity both to understand and to control what happens next? Contributors from anthropology, communications, criminology, global studies, law, literary and cultural studies, and women and gender studies bring diverse methodological approaches to these crucial questions.

This work, an important bridge between the worlds of science and law, is one of a series, but may be purchased separately. It is one of the most detailed studies thus far on the interrelationship of science and technology with the growing discipline of human rights. Apart from general perspectives, it also deals specifically with the obligations of doctors, engineers, nuclear scientists, computer technologists, genetic engineers, genetic counsellors, mining technologists, and others. No library of science, medicine, engineering or technology of any description should be without it, for it provides an irreducible minimum of human rights knowledge, without which these disciplines cannot function in the next century with due regard to their social and human rights implications. Not all scientists will agree with all the author's views, but he poses them challengingly and brings into the open a number of major issues which can no longer be ignored. The volume is a plea for an interdisciplinary and broad-based approach to scientific problems, scientific education, and continuing education of scientists. It places the scientific endeavour in its overall social and human rights context in a manner which neither students of science nor established scientists can ignore. With an approach which is both imaginative and practical, it explores the future of scientific endeavour in a humanistic perspective.

_____ The volume analyses the ambivalent relationship between human rights and modern technologies since 1945. Tools of suppression or agents of emancipation? Modern technologies have become a major subject of human rights policy. Surveillance technology, the military use of drones, and the possibilities of Big Data analysis pose new challenges for the international human rights movement. At the same time, these techniques offer new ways to document and denounce violations of human rights and to promote mass mobilization. The volume analyses this ambivalent relationship between human rights and technological change in a historical perspective. Showing how the spread of modern technologies both challenged and served human rights policies, the volume focuses on four key areas of technological change: 1) development politics, infrastructures and large technical systems, 2) population politics and demographical knowledge, 3) media cultures and communication technologies, and 4) the societal impact of computerization. By sketching these debates since 1945, the volume adds a historical perspective to current debates about the political and ethical challenges of new technological developments. The volume is published entirely in English.

In a digitally connected world, the question of how to respect, protect and fulfil human rights has become unavoidable. Uniting research from scholars and practitioners, this contemporary Handbook offers new insights into well-established debates surrounding digital technologies by framing them in terms of human rights. An international group of expert contributors explore the issues posed by the management of key Internet resources, the governance of its architecture, the role of different stakeholders, the legitimacy of rule-making and rule-enforcement, and the exercise of international public authority over users. Highly interdisciplinary, the Handbook draws on law, political science, and international relations, as well as computer science and science and technology studies in order to engage with human rights aspects of the digitally connected world. The chapters examine in depth current topics relating to human rights and security, internet access, surveillance, automation, trade, and freedom of expression. This comprehensive and engaging Handbook will be vital reading for both researchers and students in law, human rights, international politics, international relations and technology studies. Policy-makers seeking an understanding of the state of human rights in technology will also find this book a highly useful resource. Contributors include: W. Benedek, D. Bigo, D. Brodowski, G.
