The Bolex camera, 16mm reversal film stocks, commercial film laboratories, and low-budget optical printers were the small-gauge media technologies that provided the infrastructure for experimental filmmaking at the height of its cultural impact. Technology and the Making of Experimental Film Culture examines how the avant-garde embraced these material resources and invested them with meanings and values adjacent to those of semiprofessional film culture. By reasserting the physicality of the body in making time-lapse and kinesthetic sequences with the Bolex, filmmakers conversed with other art forms and integrated broader spheres of humanistic and scientific inquiry into their artistic process. Drawing from the photographic qualities of stocks such as Tri-X and Kodachrome, they discovered pliant metaphors that allowed them to connect their artistic practice to metaphysics, spiritualism, and Hollywood excess. By framing film labs as mystical or adversarial, they cultivated an oppositionality that valorized control over the artistic process. And by using the optical printer as a tool for excavating latent meaning out of found footage, they posited the reworking of images as fundamental to the exploration of personal and cultural identity. Providing a wealth of new detail about the making of canonized avant-garde classics by such luminaries as Carolee Schneemann, Jack Smith, and Stan Brakhage, as well as rediscovering works from overlooked artists such as Chick Strand, Amy Halpern, and Gunvor Nelson, Technology and the Making of Experimental Film Culture uses technology as a lens for examining the process of making: where ideas come from, how they are put into practice, and how arguments about those ideas foster cultural and artistic commitments and communities.

Conjuror's Box examines the influence of technology on American avant-garde cinema, dating roughly from the 1960s to the present. It offers causal accounts of four technological developments--the filmstrip, optical printing, film labs, and digital video--and argues that technology is crucial for understanding avant-garde cinema's complicated relationships with aesthetics, theory, culture, and the act of art-making. This entails overlapping approaches to the material: conducting primary document research and personal interviews to reconstruct key historical developments, applying close visual analysis of film form, elaborating the working processes of film and video makers, and proposing a fresh conceptual base to link the complicated, and often surprising, influence of technology on avant-garde filmmaking. This dissertation makes several contributions. First, it argues that in exploring the boundaries of a technologically delimited medium, avant-garde filmmakers innovated radical approaches to visual transformation, one of the defining characteristics of avant-garde cinema. In particular, it focuses upon the contributions of the "minor cinema" generation, arguing that this era of avant-garde filmmaking cemented reworking and "post-production" as critical to the avant-garde project. Second, it re-examines discourses of amateurism and medium specificity, both of which have been central to the avant-garde ethos. Specifically, this dissertation confronts two commonplace assumptions: 1) The avant-garde's authenticity is bound up with its lo-fi, amateur-based approach to filmmaking technology; and 2) Technology in the avant-garde always functions reflexively, to call attention to the material and ideological dimensions of the medium. In direct rebuttal, I demonstrate the avant-garde's sophisticated approach to technology for purposes that go beyond reflexivity. Third, the dissertation broadens the "institutional turn" in recent avant-garde film scholarship by focusing on technology. Perhaps because the achievements of the cinematic avant-garde are so substantial in the face of indifference or outright hostility, there is a tendency to champion its autonomy by emphasizing its separation from mainstream industries. I argue for a more complex view that understands the avant-garde to be both autonomous and dependent, piggybacking upon a variety of technological developments that were intended to service other filmmaking markets
