Many barriers to using the Internet were identified. These include the overwhelming amounts of information found on the Internet, the perceived amount of time required to access useful information, the dubious quality of some health information on the Internet, a perceived lack of training or skills in using the Internet and a lack of support by managers or organisations towards their staff using the Internet. This lack of support was often apparent in limited access to appropriate technology, infrastructure or training. Full engagement with new information and communication technologies offer individuals and communities many benefits; however it is important to ensure that these benefits are available to society as a whole, and that particular groups are not excluded. The results of this research indicate that the health promotion sector is willing to engage with new technologies to support their work practice but a number of actions are required to address the barriers that impact on their use of Internet-based technology.
