Technology is not value-free; nor does it exist in a vacuum. It needs a social basis - technology is affected by society and influences it. Technology, Values, and Society illustrates this using an examination of cross-cultural case studies representing simple, intermediate, and complex societies. Certain forms of technology exist when conducive values and structures sustain them. However, this relationship is not one-way. Technological changes do precipitate social and value changes. It is impossible to sustain egalitarian values in a society involving technology based on hierarchical relationships. Understanding this connection is vital if we are to keep some control over the way in which technology affects us. This revised edition brings the topic to life for both faculty and students.

The Metaphysics Of Technology written by David Skrbina and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-25 with Technology & Engineering categories.

What is technology? Why does it have such power in our lives? Why does it seemingly progress of its own accord, and without regard to social or environmental well-being? The quest for the essence of technology is an old one, with roots in the pre-Socratic philosophy of ancient Greece. It was then that certain thinkers first joined the ideas of technê and logos into a single worldview. The Greeks saw it as a kind of world-force, present in both the works of men and in nature itself. It was the very creative power of the cosmos. In the 20th century, German thinkers like Dessauer, Juenger, and Heidegger sought the metaphysical basis of technology, with varying success. French theologian Jacques Ellul argued persuasively that technology was an autonomous force of nature that determined all aspects of human existence, but he neglected the metaphysical underpinnings. Recent writers in the philosophy of technology have generally eschewed metaphysics altogether, preferring to concentrate on constructivist models or pragmatic analyses. In the present work, Skrbina returns to a classic metaphysical approach, seeking not so much an essence of technology but rather a deep and penetrating analysis of the entire technological phenomenon. Drawing on the Greeks, he argues for a teleological metaphysics in which increasing order in the universe is itself defined as a technological process. On this reading, all of reality constitutes a technical sphere, a "pantechnikon," of universal scope. This work — the first-ever book-length treatment of the topic — breaks new ground by providing an in-depth and critical study of the metaphysics of technology, as well as drawing out the practical consequences. Technology poses significant risks to humanity and the planet, risks that can be mitigated through a detailed philosophical analysis.

The Routledge Handbook Of Translation Technology And Society written by Stefan Baumgarten and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-08-27 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The Routledge Handbook of Translation Technology and Society offers the first comprehensive and critical exploration of translation technologies in the context of globalised multilingual societies within an increasingly AI-dominated world. This handbook calls for a fundamental rethinking of traditional approaches to translation, examining the ethical, ideological, socioeconomic, and environmental implications of digital tools and practices, such as professional AI-driven translation, ‘everyday’ machine translation, crowdsourcing translation, or platform-based translation work. It provides deep insights into pressing issues such as the commodification of language, inclusivity in so called low-resource languages, data colonialism, and labour exploitation. By questioning conventional science narratives and advocating for sustainable, inclusive, and equitable applications of translation technologies, this handbook empowers readers to engage critically with current trends and challenges in the digital age. Readers will benefit from an interdisciplinary approach that combines novel theoretical foundations with empirical research and practical case studies. It serves as a foundational reference and a springboard for (critical) future research in an evolving – sociotechnical – translation ecosystem where the blurring boundaries between human and machinic agents foster new modes of translator-machine interaction. This handbook is an essential resource for academics, researchers, and professionals in translation studies, digital humanities, science and technology studies, or (digital) discourse studies.
