The definition of the risks of adolescent childbearing has received considerable investigative attention during the last decade. We have gradually moved away from simplistically studying young maternal age as the sole determinant of biologie and psychosocial outcome, even though we recognize it is one of several factors which warrant consideration. We now recognize that if adolescents receive adequate and consistent pre natal care, they and their infants should do nearly as weIl as adult women and their infants of similar backgrounds. Thus, the major morbidities for adolescent mothers, adolescent fathers, and their infants are psychosocial: lack of educational and voca tional futures, failed marriages, and dependence on government aid for support. The adequacy of the parenting of adolescent mothers and fathers and the long-term developmental and physical outcomes of their children are largely unstudied. This book, edited by Dr. Max Sugar, a recognized authority on adolescence, focuses on the important topic of adolescent parenthood. The authors of this timely contribution approach the topic of adolescent parenthood in a unique fashion, utilizing a combination of several approaches: consideration of fictional characters in history , astute and carefully conceptual ized clinical observations, reviews of the literature, and their own investigation. lt will be through the use of such a creative approach that we shall define the important quest ions which should be addressed about adolescents as parents and the outcome for their children.

"Policy makers and media claim that teenage parenthood ruins young people?s lives and those of their children, as well as threatening wider social and moral breakdown. Yet research increasingly shows that parenthood is not necessarily a disaster for young women and young men, and indeed can sometimes improve their lives. Why is that becoming a mother or father can make sense for and be valued by some young people? And why is that policy makers ignore the research evidence that teenage parenthood is not an inevitable catastrophe? [This book] presents recent quantitative and qualitative research on teenage motherhood and fatherhood, [including]: the relationship between age, pre-existing disadvantage and social outcomes for mothers and their children; the gulf between government policy assumptions and the understandings of teenage parents and their families; the variable ways in which young mothers' and fathers' ethnic identification articulates with gender, class and age; how young parents see themselves as 'just another mum or dad' when it comes to parenting, education and employment; commonalities in resilience and family support for teenage parents between and over generations; links between experiences of parenting and self-identity, and how these can be affected by support from family and friends, and by formal service delivery. These issues are placed in the context of a wide-ranging review of research evidence on teenage parenting, and a consideration of why government policy seems to ignore this evidence."--Jacket.

Teenage parenthood is recognised as a significant disadvantage in western industrialised nations. It has been found to increase the likelihood of poverty and to reinforce inequalities. This book explores, for the first time, the links between welfare state provision and teenage reproductive behaviour across a range of countries with differing welfare regimes. Drawing on both welfare state and feminist literature, as well as on new empirical evidence, the book compares public policy responses to teenage parenthood in each 'family' of welfare regime: Nordic, Liberal and Continental (Western European); analyses the different socio-political contexts in which teenage pregnancy is constructed as a social problem and identifies best practice in Europe and the USA. Countries included in the study are the UK, USA, New Zealand, France, Italy, Poland, Denmark, Norway, the Canadian province of Quebec and Russia. The contributors are all internationally recognised experts in the fields of welfare and/or gender studies. When children become parents is important reading for a wide audience of students, policy makers, practitioners and academics in sociology, social policy, social geography, education, psychology, and youth and gender studies.

Teenage Pregnancy Parenting And Intergenerational Relations written by Sally Brown and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-19 with Social Science categories.

Drawing on interviews and focus groups with young mothers and fathers, their parents and other relatives, this book provides a rich exploration of the experience of being a teenage parent now, and for earlier generations, closely examining teenage pregnancy and parenting in families where two or more generations have been teenage mothers. Brown also explores the cultural and social contexts of teenage parenting by including the views of people who have many years’ experience of working with young parents in health, social and welfare settings. The book challenges policy contexts which focus on negative aspects of teenage parenting, and shows that for many young people, parenting can be a positive experience. It will appeal to academics, policymakers and professionals with an interest in teenage pregnancy and parenting.

This book examines who is likely to have a baby as a teenager, the consequences of early motherhood and how teenage pregnancy is dealt with in the media. The author argues that society's negative attitude to young mothers marginalises an already excluded group and that efforts should be focused on support.
