Since Origen and Chrysostom, John’s Gospel has been valued as the most spiritual among the New Testament writings. Although Origen recognizes the Stoic character of John’s statement that “God is pneuma” (4:24), an examination of the gospel in light of Stoic physics has not yet been carried out. Combining her insight into Stoic physics and ancient physiology, the author situates her thesis in the major discussions of modern Johannine scholarship – e.g. the role of the Baptist and the function of the Johannine signs – and demonstrates new solutions to well-known problems. The Stoic study of the Fourth Gospel reveals a coherent narrative tied together by the spirit. The problem with which John’s Gospel wrestles is not the identity of Jesus, but the transition from the Son of God to the next generation of divinely begotten children: how did it come about? A reading carried out from a Stoic perspective points to the translation of the risen body of Jesus into spirit as the decisive event. The provision of the spirit is a precondition of the divine generation of believers. Both events are explained by Stoic theory which allows of a transformation of fleshly elements into pneuma and of multiple fatherhood. In fact, in his Commentary on John, Origen described Jesus’ ascension as an event of anastoixeiôsis, which is the Stoic term for the transformation of heavily elements into lighter and pneumatic ones.

This volume represents the work of 12 authors, all of whom were or are working at the Department of Education at the University of Oslo. This volume aims to provide insights into the diversity of some of the research conducted during the last ten years in Norway, and to shed light on the diverse and broad field of education represented by various new voices from the Department. The contributions have in common that they represent what we can understand as Norwegian voices, at the same time they also show how Norwegian researchers are communicating with and contributing to the international field of educational research. The researchers contributing to this volume are all trained and skilled within a Norwegian tradition, and yet have a broad and international outlook. Norway is a country built on social democratic values, safely situated in one of the northern most corners of the world. During the last ten years or so, the national educational system has been challenged and adjusted to be compatible with international educational trends and expectations. This has brought Norway one step closer to more internationalized and globalized educational approaches, which is clearly shown in this volume. The major themes in this volume serve to highlight this trend with a focus on issues such as achievement goals, motivation and innovation, digital tools and technology in education and new ways of teaching and learning, which include a focus on issues concerning diversity and democracy. The editors and the authors have been collaborating since they first started out as PhD students roughly ten years ago. In this volume, the ambition is to bring together the expertise from this period, and to highlight the contribution to research conducted at the Institute. At a time of potentially radical changes in the ways in which humans interact with their environments - through financial, environmental and/or social crises - the raison d'être of spatial planning faces significant conceptual and empirical challenges. This Companion presents a multidimensional collection of critical narratives of conceptual challenges for spatial planning. The authors draw on various disciplinary traditions and theoretical frames to explore different ways of conceptualising spatial planning and the challenges it faces. Through problematising planning itself, the values which underpin planning and theory-practice relations, contributions make visible the limits of established planning theories and illustrate how, by thinking about new issues, or about issues in new ways, spatial planning might be advanced both theoretically and practically. There cannot be definitive answers to the conceptual challenges posed, but the authors in this collection provoke critical questions and debates over important issues for spatial planning and its future. A key question is not so much what planning theory is, but what might planning theory do in times of uncertainty and complexity. An underlying rationale is that planning theory and practice are intrinsically connected. The Companion is presented in three linked parts: issues which arise from an interactive understanding of the relations between planning ideas and the political-institutional contexts in which such ideas are put to work; key concepts in current theorising from mainly poststructuralist perspectives and what discussion on complexity may offer planning theory and practice.
