Een studie in het kader van de herdenking van de 300e sterfdag (18 juli 2021) van Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). De inhoudsopgave op de eerste twee pagina's bevat aanklikbare titels om naar de diverse onderdelen te gaan. Via het aangeboden bestandsformaat (PDF) is de studie op trefwoorden doorzoekbaar. Doel van deze studie is inzicht te verschaffen in de tekentechnieken die Watteau toepaste. Daarbij is zijn levensloop kort geschetst, zijn de plaatsen waar hij heeft geleefd en gewerkt gevisualiseerd. Historische bronnen van kunstenaars uit Nederland, Frankrijk en Duitsland over de praktijk van het tekenen en van natuurkundigen over rood tekenkrijt komen aan bod. Vakgenoten spreken zich uit over het maken van rood tekenkrijt tekeningen. Watteau komt daarbij ook zelf aan het woord. Critici buigen zich over de werkwijze van Watteau. Handelaren en 'amateurs' benoemen de factoren die de aantrekkingskracht van zijn werk in hun tijd bepalen. Eigenschappen van papier als drager, kenmerken van rood natuurkrijt, handige hulpmiddelen en gereedschappen passeren de revue. Tenslotte worden ook schema's die in de tekeningen van Watteau herkenbaar zijn behandeld. Zoveel mogelijk is via links naar internetbronnen extra verdieping beschikbaar. Er is dus bewust afgezien van voet- en eindnoten. Een korte lijst van standaard(plaat)werken uit de afgelopen jaren sluit de studie af. My greatest debt in the writing of this book is to my teacher Dr. Ulrich Middeldorf, who taught me the methodology of research in art history, and who guided my studies of art theory and criticism. This study, which in an earlier form was accepted as a doctoral dissertation by the University of Chicago, was begun under Dr. Middeldorf's guidance, and during all stages of its preparation I benefited from his invaluable suggestions and criticism.
