Telemedicine is the use of telecommunications technology for diagnostic, monitoring, or therapeutic purposes where distance and/or time separates the patient from the health care provider.7 Ocular telemedicine has the potential of delivering eye care to those with limited access to health care resources.2 In general, the equipment required in tele-ophthalmology consists of image acquisition hardwa [...] The intent is to provide a list of sources and a summary of the best evidence on the topic that CADTH could identify using all reasonable efforts within the time allowed. [...] The purpose of the current report is to evaluate the evidence for the clinical and cost- effectiveness of tele-ophthalmology for detecting DR, AMD, and glaucoma. [...] The authors of the systematic review concluded that the quality of studies in the domain of tele-ophthalmology was slightly higher than in other specialties such as dermatology, and the evidence for the effectiveness in detecting eye diseases was mixed. [...] The authors designed agency-specific cost-effectiveness decision models by using Monte Carlo simulations for three outcomes: the number of true positive cases of proliferative DR detected by each modality, the number of patients identified by each modality who required treatment with panretinal laser photocoagulation, and the number of cases of severe vision loss averted.

Digital retinal imaging performed by primary care providers and nurses, followed by remote image interpretation (teleretinal imaging), is rapidly acquiring a crucial role in many parts of the world as it permits the detection of major diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, in patients who would otherwise be beyond the reach of a trained ophthalmologist. In this book, experts from around the world describe how digital teleretinal screening can be set up and optimally utilized. Technical issues are discussed, and the appropriate use of screening for different diseases and in different age groups is explained. The major part of the book draws upon the clinical experience of leading practitioners in a wide range of teleretinal applications. The result is a comprehensive source of high-quality information for clinicians and other health professionals who are involved in eye care delivery, so that they can assess how teleretinal screening might be applied to their working practice.

The eyes are complex organs, with many parts that must work together to produce clear vision."Oh, something is wrong with my eye!" We have all said this at some time. How uncomfortable it can be! Fortunately, many common eye disorders disappear without treatment or can be managed by self-treating. An ophthalmologist is a medical or osteopathic doctor who specializes in eye and vision care. An ophthalmologist to take care of more complex or specific conditions in certain areas of the eye or in certain groups of patients. Meanwhile, Tele-ophthalmology has been employed mainly for patients in under-served rural areas in need of specialty care, but other applications such as telementoring have also been used. In certain populations, cost containment is a significant issue and telemedicine is a solution. Tele-ophthalmology shows great promise for improving patient care and increasing access to specialty care not available in under-served areas. This book which is arranged in nine chapters goes through ophthalmology basics and Tele-ophthalmology concepts. In the last 10 years, there has been huge progress in the general understanding of ocular disorders due to the availability and development of new in vivo imaging techniques, such as anterior and posterior eye segment optical coherence tomography as well as biochemical methods allowing rapid confirmation of clinical diagnosis.Introducing noninvasive diagnostic methods in ophthalmology led to an improvement in early differential diagnosis of conditions such as corneal dystrophies, dry eye disease, and various retinal and optic nerve diseases.Recent advances in diagnostic methods have also impacted the treatment methods. This book intends to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of current ocular diagnostic methods, including the theoretical basis as well as practical approaches and usage in clinical practice.
