Today, mobile connections are so readily accessible that it is perhaps easy to forget the time when only the elite had access to a phone provided by the sole operator: the Government of India. It all changed in the early 1990s as liberalisation stirred the Indian economy out of its decades of complacency. The Telecom Wars begins its narration from those times, traversing the uncertain early years of the mobile phone industry. It is a vivid portrait of the fierce competition as Tata, Birla, Reliance, and Bharti bid to capture the lion’s share of India’s billion voices. As they did, India’s institutions to regulate and manage the sector also evolved—the ministry separated from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), and state-run operators MTNL and BSNL also joined the fray. Policy makers, entrepreneurs, and bureaucrats worked tirelessly to change India’s cellular topography. Fast-paced and expertly written, veteran financial journalist Deepali Gupta’s account is both a comprehensive history and a work of great business insight.

Explores the efforts of the US and the EU to implement the WTO Basic Agreement on Telecommunications Services, and how these initiatives to open up local markets affect markets for international telecoms services. Naftel (a telecommunications lawyer) and Spiwak (a policy consultant) report that the telecoms trade war is close to getting out of hand and that there is a growing politicization of, and cynicism towards the regulatory process. Their contention is that many post- WTO regulatory initiatives ultimately harm consumers. The text is divided into sections on the analytical and legal framework, US and European efforts to promote competition, and case studies in regulatory cynicism. Distributed by ISBS. c. How is the Internet produced as an infrastructure in post-socialist Lithuania? Migle Bareikyte contributes to the growing field of STS and media studies with a distinct focus on Eastern Europe. She situates the Internet development in Lithuania's telecom industry with the exploration of its labor practices, geopolitical imaginaries, and critical negotiations from a bottom-up perspective. Bareikyte further explores how fieldwork-based research can foster new theorizations of media infrastructures. Finally, she argues for a situated investigation of new places and actors beyond the United States and Western Europe–such as post-socialist regions–in order to explore the diversity of media infrastructures.

Japanese Telecommunications written by Ruth Taplin and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-02-01 with Social Science categories.

Presenting a comprehensive survey of the telecommunications industry in Japan, Taplin and Wakui cover the different sectors of the industry – including mobile, broadband and satellite, whilst considering key questions such as the structure and economics of the industry, government policy, and international relations issues connected to the industry. The volume brings together unique analysis by renowned experts in the telecommunications field. One major overall problem is that, unlike many other industries, Japan has lagged behind other countries in telecommunications. Japanese Telecommunications considers why this should be so, showing how far this is attributable to an unmodernized industry structure, and assessing the measures being taken to address the problem. After over a decade of struggle, Japan has recorded rapid uptake of broadband, and Japanese advanced mobile services have become increasingly successful on a global scale. Japan has also undergone regulatory reform, and competition policy is now given top priority by government. Taplin and Wakui examine the most recent developments and provide signposts for the future.

Telecoms In The Internet Age written by Martin Fransman and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Business & Economics categories.

The telecoms industry is one of the most important in the global economy. Without it the Internet and Information Society would not exist. But how does it work? How has it been changed by the Internet? Why was $2,500 billion wiped off its stock market value in 2000/1? How have its incumbentoperators (such as ATandT, BT, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, and NTT) and their aggressive rivals (for example WorldCom, Qwest, and COLT) adjusted to the radical changes sweeping the industry? Why has Japan succeeded but Europe failed in creating the latest incarnation of the industry, themobile Internet? These are some of the key questions analysed. The book begins with an explanation of the telecoms boom and bust, 1996-2002. It tackes the questions regarding who was to blame and why, and also examines the consequences of the bust. An analytical framework is created to understand the main forces driving the telecoms industry as it istransformed by the Internet into the infocommunications industry. It is shown that knowledge in its various manifestations and changes in knowledge are responsible for the key changes that have taken place. The foundation of the infocommunications industry comprises a combination of specialist technology suppliers (such as Cisco, Nokia, NEC, and Nortel) and network operators. Their changing relationship lies at the heart of the forces driving the industry. The author looks at how these changes haveaffected the struggles of the incumbent network operators and their new entrant rivals. He also analyses some of the main new entrpreneurs in the industry, looking at why they managed to enter so successfully, what has become of them, and why. The continuing changes in the knowledge base of theindustry are examined, as are some of the latest developments in the mobile Internet. Finally, the future of the industry is confronted. The book is complemented by the interactive web site: www.TelecomVisions.com

The mobile telecommunication industry has been one of the fastest growing industries in the global economy since the late 1990s. As the first country to offer commercial Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular service in the world, Korea was able to jump right into the digital mobile markets, enhancing its status as a leading manufacturer of mobile equipment. While the growth of the telecom industry occurred with the emergence of worldwide market-oriented regulatory reform and liberalization in telecommunications, the state-market relationship in Korea evolved from state monopoly toward “centralized governance” and later toward “flexible governance,” which is substantially different from “liberal governance” of the US. This book examines the uniqueness of Korean regulatory reforms of the mobile telecommunication sector, and argues that the market-oriented regulatory reform and liberalization should be explained by focusing on the interactions among the state, the private sector, and international political economic environment. It will appeal to scholars and policy-makers alike concerned with market regulation, Asian development and political economy.
