While rural people in a developing country like Thailand is often perceived as media dupes, the notion of 'active audiences' within the sphere of cultural studies coupled with an ethnographic methodology allow us to gain insight of how media messages are reproduced and interpreted by the audience. This book analyses the articulations of local and global cultures in rural Thai society through audiences' reproduction and interpretation of news meanings. It demonstrates the audiences' reading of television news is an interdiscursive practice where a number of discourses are brought to bear on the text, both from and within a 'local' and a 'global' context. Television news does not simply represent another encroachment of 'globalisation', nor destroy all together any notion of a local 'organic identity'. Interestingly, in particular contexts audiences' interpretation of news tend to reveal a form of cultural hybridisation where local and global cultural identities are combined to make sense of news events.

The story and impact of India's television encounter is told through seven chapters: the nature of the state's monopoly over television until the early 1990s; the entry of global satellite television and how Indian capitalists negotiated the boundaries of state control to go from one to 300 channels in less than a decade; the transformation of the Indian state, seen through the prism of broadcast law and the television economy; advertising and the strength of Indian capitalism that is fuelling the rapid expansion of television; the close linkages between television and questions of national identity through a case-study of cricket programming; and finally news television's impact on politics, through an analysis of the links between television programming and democratic culture; and a separate case study of the Gujarat riots and assembly election of 2002. Together, these chapters document the complex ways in which satellite television transformed India, while it was simultaneously being Indianised. This book examines the development of television in India since the early 1990s, and its implications for Indian society more widely. Until 1991, India possessed only a single state-owned television channel, but since then there has been a rapid expansion in independent satellite channels which came as a complete break from the statist control of the past.
