Tell Freedom I Said Hello written by Christian Ludwig and has been published by Universitatsverlag Winter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-15 with Dystopias in literature categories.

Despite its popularity, the newest wave of dystopian narratives is often viewed as derivative and deficient. This collection proposes a different, more nuanced viewpoint, arguing that contemporary dystopian fiction changes and updates genre conventions to tackle controversial and contemporary issues in complex ways, such as environmental destruction (Julie Bertagna's 'Exodus' (2002), Sacci Lloyd's 'The Carbon Diaries: 2015/2017' (2009, 2010), Julianna Baggott's 'Pure' (2012)), the effects of bio-technological progress gone awry (Lauren DeStefano's 'Chemical Garden' trilogy (2011-2013), Karen Sandler's 'Tankborn' (2011)), or the consequences of war (Lauren Oliver's 'Delirium' (2011)). While the volume's first part collects essays that approach dystopia from a literary and cultural studies perspective, the second part explores the potential that texts such as Veronica Roth's 'Divergent' (2011), Suzanne Collin's 'The Hunger Games' (2008) or David Macaulay's graphic novel 'BAA' (1985) have for the EFL classroom.

During the tail end of the Vietnam War, the US Army Europe, faced with a large drug problem among soldiers stationed in Germany, opens the Freedom House, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. A group of unforgettable characters are chosen to administer an unorthodox program laced with Zen Buddhism, Taoism and an enigmatic teacher, Duane Baldini, an ex-Marine. Duane brings Christopher Bold on board, a confused college graduate who is trying to find his own way against the legacy and the background of the turbulent and revolutionary period of the late sixties. Christopher is confronted by the universal struggle with dualities--the mind vs. the body, the head vs. the heart, "them" vs. "us" in his attempt to find the road to himself. He also is confronted by First Sgt. Ron Slade, a career Army man, whose "real" world experience clashes with the "new age" teaching and antics of both Duane and Christopher. The result is a story that is funny, poignant, and fascinating in its portrayal of a young man on a journey to find himself against the tragedy of war, strife, a torn nation and the comedy of a M.A.S.H.-like military environment.

Friedrich Schiller, the great German classical poet and friend of the American Revolution, assigned to art the task of ennobling the spirit of Man, especially at those times when political circumstances are most unfavorable, men most degraded, and when the qualities of genius are most urgently required to find a way to avert political catastrophe. Reading Schiller’s poetry, as well as his historical, philosophical, and aesthetic works, has precisely the effect on the sensitive reader of which Schiller informed us--to produce in the reader an ennobling power which then continues to exist long after the reading is done. This is volume II of the four volume collection of translations. Volume II includes Schiller Institute English translations of the following: Wilhelm Tell The Parasite What Is, and to What End Do We Study, Universal History The Legislation of Lycurgus and Solon On Grace and Dignity Kalias, or, On the Beautiful The Mission of Moses

Freedom And Responsibility In Neoplatonist Thought written by Ursula Coope and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-16 with Philosophy categories.

The Neoplatonists have a perfectionist view of freedom: an entity is free to the extent that it succeeds in making itself good. Free entities are wholly in control of themselves—they are self-determining, self-constituting, and self-knowing. Neoplatonist philosophers argue that such freedom is only possible for non-bodily things. The human soul is free insofar as it rises above bodily things and engages in intellection, but when it turns its desires to bodily things, it is drawn under the sway of fate and becomes enslaved. Ursula Coope discusses this notion of freedom and its relation to questions about responsibility. She explains the important role of notions of self-reflexivity in Neoplatonist accounts of both freedom and responsibility. In Part I, Coope sets out the puzzles Neoplatonist philosophers face about freedom and responsibility and explains how these puzzles arise from earlier discussions. Part II explores the metaphysical underpinnings of the Neoplatonist notion of freedom (concentrating especially on the views of Plotinus and Proclus). In what sense, if any, is the ultimate first principle of everything (the One) free? If everything else is under this ultimate first principle, how can anything other than the One be free? What is the connection between freedom and nonbodiliness? Finally, Coope considers in Part III questions about responsibility, arising from this perfectionist view of freedom. Why are human beings responsible for their behaviour, in a way that other animals are not? If we are enslaved when we act viciously, how can we be to blame for our vicious actions and choices?

A Scandalous Freedom written by Steve Brown and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11-24 with Religion categories.

A reader’s delight, A Scandalous Freedom sometimes shocks with challenges to prevailing wisdom, but it follows up with compelling validations of our need to celebrate real, unstinted freedom in Christ. Christians do not trust freedom. As author Steve Brown explains in this brave new book, they prefer the security of rules and self-imposed boundaries, which they tend to inflict on other Christians. Brown asserts that real freedom means the freedom to be wrong as well as right. Christianity often calls us to live beyond the boundaries, bolstered by the assurance that we cannot fall beyond God’s love. Freedom is dangerous, but the alternative is worse—boxing ourselves up where we cannot celebrate our unique gifts and express our joy in Christ. Each of the book’s eleven chapters explores a common pharisaic, freedom-stifling tendency, then opens the door to the fresh air of a remedial liberty.
